Role Overview:

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is a global leader in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and a strong advocate for universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). As part of a worldwide movement of national organizations, IPPF works with communities and individuals to promote health, rights, and well-being.

The IPPF Secretariat operates from a London office and six regional offices, including the Africa Regional Office (IPPFAR) in Nairobi, Kenya. IPPFAR’s primary goal is to improve access to SRHR services for vulnerable populations in sub-Saharan Africa, collaborating with local civil society organizations, governments, the African Union (AU), regional economic commissions (RECs), and the United Nations to drive political and financial commitments to SRHR in Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

The Communications Intern will support the implementation of the Feminist Opportunities Now (FON) Project and the Justice for Survivors (J4S) Project by:

  • Content Creation & Curation: Assist in developing content for FON’s website, social media platforms, newsletters, and other communication channels.
  • Design & Development: Help design promotional materials such as brochures, flyers, and infographics to promote the projects.
  • Event Organization: Contribute to organizing and promoting events, workshops, and campaigns related to the projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Support in building and maintaining relationships with community partners, other organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Logistical Coordination: Help with logistical tasks including venue booking, transportation, and material preparation for meetings and events.
  • Preparation of Meeting Materials: Assist in preparing agendas, presentations, and other materials that align with project objectives and communication strategies.
  • Problem-solving: Identify potential challenges in project planning and propose solutions to ensure smooth execution.
  • Team Collaboration: Work alongside diverse teams to determine the logistics, timing, location, and thematic content for events and initiatives.

Skills & Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Education: An undergraduate degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Digital Media Skills: Ability to produce and edit videos, images, and other promotional materials for campaigns. Proficiency in photography and video production, including creating visuals for social media platforms.
  • Technical Competence: Working knowledge of communication software, media contexts, and tools for web content editing and publishing.
  • Social Media Expertise: Experience in managing social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok) and creating compelling content for these platforms.
  • Communication Skills: Strong writing and editing skills for social media platforms. Fluent in English (French proficiency is a plus).
  • Stakeholder Management: Ability to manage relationships and collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Creativity & Initiative: A proactive mindset with creativity in content development and campaign execution.
  • Feminist Approach: Experience working with or being part of feminist movements, with an understanding of intersectional and decolonial approaches.
  • Awareness of Global Issues: Familiarity with issues at the intersections of youth, gender, disability, and a global South perspective.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a multicultural, multilingual environment.

  • Digital Storytelling: Passion for using social media platforms and digital tools to tell impactful stories and support campaigns.
  • Commitment to Feminism & Gender Equality: Alignment with IPPFAR’s values of advocating for sexual and reproductive health care rights, including safe abortion access and the rights of sex workers.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work outside standard office hours if required.
