Organization and Role:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on environmental matters. UNEP’s Climate Change Division supports countries in implementing climate solutions aligned with the Paris Agreement. The UN-REDD Programme focuses on forest solutions to mitigate climate change, and it partners with various UN bodies to help reduce deforestation and promote sustainable land use.

The Communications Officer will be part of the Climate Change Division in Nairobi and will play a key role in promoting and implementing UN-REDD’s knowledge management (KM) and communications strategy, with a particular focus on the Africa region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge Management & Communications Strategy:
    • Liaise with partners to ensure delivery of the KM and communications strategy and workplan.
    • Assist in incorporating KM and communications activities into annual and semi-annual Programme progress reports.
    • Promote media coverage for the Programme, including arranging press conferences, media interviews, and disseminating materials.
    • Advise management on current events, public opinion, and press trends.
  • Media & Reporting:
    • Draft communications and media plans.
    • Oversee production of KM/communications products (e.g., press releases, articles, speeches, brochures).
    • Manage content for the UN-REDD website and social media platforms.
    • Monitor and report on the impact of communications materials.
  • Events & Knowledge Management:
    • Develop and implement regional and global events related to climate change and deforestation.
    • Coordinate knowledge exchanges and webinars.
    • Collect and analyze data for continuous improvement of KM and communication activities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s) in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field. A first university degree with additional qualifications may be considered.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in communication and/or knowledge management related to climate action or ecosystem conservation. Experience in managing communications for global multi-stakeholder partnerships is required.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication skills, including writing, editing, and content production.
    • Experience in managing websites and social media.
    • Ability to analyze data and visualize trends for decision-making.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Commitment to gender equality and inclusive participation in all areas of work.
  • Experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable.
