Who We Are

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is an international organization dedicated to accelerating action on climate change adaptation. Our mission is to support adaptation solutions at both the international and local levels, focusing on those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. We aim to protect communities least equipped to face the health, social, and economic impacts of the climate emergency. Founded in 2018, we operate globally with offices in Rotterdam, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Bangladesh, and Beijing, as well as a knowledge hub in Groningen, the Netherlands.

What We Do

GCA works on high-level policy development, research, agenda-setting, and advocacy to drive meaningful climate adaptation. We engage with governments, international organizations, and the private sector to ensure climate adaptation stays central to the global climate agenda.

About the Role

The External Affairs team at GCA is the bridge between the organization and the global community. We foster strategic relationships with key stakeholders including governments, international organizations, and financial institutions to accelerate adaptation action. This role offers an exciting opportunity to support diplomatic engagements, manage stakeholder relations, and contribute to the success of high-level events and political summits.

As an External Affairs Intern, you will support the Senior Partnerships and External Affairs Officer in managing diplomatic communications, preparing briefings for external engagements, and organizing high-level events. You will be actively involved in maintaining stakeholder contact databases, managing logistics for meetings, and ensuring proper protocol is followed in all diplomatic interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diplomatic Engagement Support: Communicate with diplomatic missions in Nairobi, update the contact database, and assist in maintaining strong relations with key stakeholders, government officials, project partners, and internal teams.
  • Event Coordination: Assist in arranging meetings with stakeholders, ensuring all logistics (e.g., venue, virtual platforms) are prepared, and help draft invitations.
  • Meeting Documentation: Attend meetings with GCA stakeholders and take detailed notes, ensuring clear action items and timelines are captured in meeting minutes.
  • Event Preparation: Assist in organizing and implementing high-level political summits, events, and meetings, including preparation of diplomatic communications (e.g., Note Verbale).
  • Briefing and Communication: Draft official diplomatic communications, prepare briefing materials for missions, and assist in preparing documents for external engagements, including for the CEO.
  • Climate News Monitoring: Monitor and report on climate and global affairs news, with a particular focus on climate adaptation.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in international relations, politics, economics, journalism, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated interest or commitment to international relations, international development, or climate change diplomacy, with a focus on adaptation.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in research, analysis, writing, and editing.
  • Fluent in English (knowledge of French is a plus).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of multilateral protocol and diplomatic communication.

Terms of Internship

  • This is an unpaid internship, and there is no expectation of employment upon completion.
