Overview
Second Nature, a leading non-profit organization focused on advancing climate action in higher education, is seeking a Climate Policy Fellow to support its initiatives related to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and higher education climate projects. This exciting and impactful role will involve collecting data, conducting policy research, creating educational resources, and contributing to Second Nature’s advocacy and outreach efforts. The Fellow will collaborate with key stakeholders and support institutions in understanding climate policies while advocating for climate action across campuses.
Primary Responsibilities
As a Climate Policy Fellow, your primary duties will include:
- Database and Map Creation:
Develop a national-scale, searchable database and interactive map for IRA-related higher education projects. These will be layered with additional data sources such as legislative districts, and they will help facilitate outreach and decision-making within the higher education community. - Educational Tools & Resources:
Create informative resources that help campuses understand and navigate federal climate policies, particularly focusing on provisions in the IRA. These tools will be used to support the climate action efforts of higher education institutions. - Community of Practice & Working Group Support:
Contribute to and support Second Nature’s IRA Community of Practice and the Academics for Climate Advocacy Working Group by sharing knowledge, participating in meetings, and coordinating collaborative efforts. - Collaboration with Agencies & Nonprofits:
Explore opportunities to coordinate with federal and state agencies, as well as nonprofit organizations, to further the goals of higher education climate action. - Climate Policy Research & Analysis:
Conduct research and analysis on climate policy issues in support of Second Nature’s advocacy efforts, helping inform policy recommendations and advancing the organization’s advocacy goals. - Equity & Inclusion:
Support Second Nature’s commitment to inclusivity by ensuring that the work you do strengthens equitable access, promotes inclusion, and aligns with the organization’s values of justice, equity, and sustainability. - General Responsibilities:
As with any dynamic role, additional responsibilities and duties may be assigned or evolve over time, depending on the needs of the organization and the projects at hand.
Qualifications
To be considered for the Climate Policy Fellow position, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Educational Background:
An Associate’s degree in political science (or related field) and/or 2 years of relevant policy research or work experience. A Bachelor’s degree or graduate coursework is a plus. - Technical Skills:
Intermediate or advanced knowledge of mapping products such as ArcGIS, Tableau, or similar tools is required. This role will involve creating and analyzing visual maps and data, so familiarity with these tools is essential. - Climate Policy Understanding:
A demonstrated understanding of climate policy and the ability to translate complex data and information into actionable insights that inform policy decisions and advocacy efforts. - Independent Work:
Strong ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and track progress on projects effectively. - Communication & Facilitation:
Group facilitation skills and the ability to communicate complex policy issues clearly to various stakeholders, including faculty, policymakers, and staff. Comfort with public speaking or group settings is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications would be advantageous:
- Experience working with higher education institutions on climate-related programs or initiatives.
- Familiarity with federal climate policy and specific provisions related to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
- Previous experience developing searchable, multi-layer mapping products with ArcGIS, Tableau, or other similar mapping tools.
- A demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies, including technical experts, faculty, staff, and policymakers.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to research, summarize, and draw conclusions from complex data, translating those findings into clear and actionable recommendations.
Position Details
- Location: This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere.
- Schedule: The Fellow will work approximately 20 hours per week. While the work schedule is flexible, there is a strong preference for some of the hours to fall between 10 AM and 3 PM Eastern Time from Monday to Thursday.
- Duration: This is a six-month part-time fellowship with a total stipend of $15,000, paid bi-weekly. Please note that this position does not offer benefits beyond Paid Time Off.
- Supervision: The Climate Policy Fellow will report to the Director of Communications and Marketing, collaborating closely with the Climate Policy Manager and Senior Director of Programs.
