The RWSN Mentoring Programme 2025: Empowering Water Sector Professionals

Navigating a career in the rural water sector can be a daunting experience, particularly when it comes to understanding the various pathways available and how to achieve one’s professional goals. For many, the challenge is finding the right guidance and support to accelerate career development. This is where mentoring becomes an invaluable tool. It provides an opportunity for professionals in the water sector to connect, share knowledge, and support each other in their career growth.

Since its inception in 2019, the Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) Mentoring Programme has aimed to offer mentorship and professional development to individuals working in the water sector. The program is open to all RWSN members and offers a collaborative environment to exchange ideas and experiences that enhance career trajectories.

Introducing the 2025 RWSN Mentoring Programme

The 2025 edition of the RWSN Mentoring Programme marks the 6th year of this impactful initiative. Scheduled for launch in collaboration with Agenda for Change and the Global Water Center (GWC), this year’s program is free for all RWSN members and is open to individuals across the water sector. Whether you’re a young professional, an experienced mentor, or someone looking to switch career tracks, the RWSN Mentoring Programme provides tailored support and resources to help participants excel.

Three Special Tracks in 2025

This year, the programme has introduced three distinct tracks, each designed to meet the diverse needs of professionals within the water sector. Participants can select one or more tracks to join based on their interests and career objectives.

1. Women in WASH Program

Managed by Agenda for Change, this track is dedicated to empowering women in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector. The programme focuses on providing a platform for women to enhance their personal and professional development by facilitating mentorship connections. Women are notably underrepresented in the water sector, and this initiative seeks to address that imbalance. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with experienced women mentors who can offer valuable guidance and insights to help accelerate their careers. The programme encourages women to participate as both mentors and mentees, fostering an environment of growth, empowerment, and collaboration.

2. RWSN Career Progression Programme

This track is open to young professionals under 35 and women of all ages, offering mentorship to help them advance in their careers within the water sector. The programme welcomes both mentees and mentors, allowing individuals to apply for both roles simultaneously. While the programme has a strong focus on rural water supply, it is open to professionals in all areas of the water sector, making it accessible to a wide range of participants. This track is perfect for those seeking career guidance and practical advice from senior professionals to help navigate the complexities of the sector.

3. Solar-Powered Water Systems (SPWS)

In partnership with the Global Water Center (GWC), this track is designed for professionals who have completed SPWS training programs or have practical experience in the field. It provides mentorship tailored to individuals looking to enhance their expertise in solar-powered water systems, a rapidly growing area within the water sector. The programme supports career growth and offers opportunities to connect with industry leaders, providing invaluable networking opportunities for participants with a specific focus on renewable energy solutions in water management.

Who Can Participate?

The programme welcomes a wide range of professionals from the water sector, each with different levels of experience and expertise. Here’s a breakdown of eligibility for both mentors and mentees:

Mentors

There is no age limit for mentors, but applicants should have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the water sector. The programme seeks a variety of mentors with diverse skills and levels of experience. Senior professionals are encouraged to apply, but even those who may not feel they are “senior enough” are welcome to offer their knowledge and insights to mentees. The programme particularly encourages women to sign up as both mentors and mentees, acknowledging the need for more female representation in the sector. Feedback from past mentees has shown that women gain significantly from being mentored by other women, making this an especially impactful opportunity.

Mentees

Eligible mentees include:

  • Young professionals under the age of 35.
  • Women of all ages, as part of the commitment to increasing gender diversity in the sector.
  • Alumni of selected RWSN courses (e.g., solar-powered water systems, groundwater resources management, and professional drilling management). There is no minimum level of experience required, and students are also welcome to participate.

Benefits of Joining the RWSN Mentoring Programme

Participating in the RWSN Mentoring Programme comes with numerous benefits for both mentors and mentees. These include:

  • Career Development: Participants gain valuable guidance on how to advance in their careers, overcome challenges, and set achievable goals.
  • Networking: The programme connects individuals across the global water sector, offering access to new professional networks and collaborative opportunities.
  • Empowerment: Through mentorship, individuals gain the confidence and knowledge they need to take on leadership roles and advocate for change in the sector.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: By supporting women and underrepresented groups, the programme helps foster a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable workforce in the water sector.
  • Skill Enhancement: Mentees and mentors alike benefit from the exchange of ideas, skills, and expertise, leading to enhanced professional capabilities.
