About Protection International (PI)

Protection International (PI) is an international NGO dedicated to improving the protection of human rights defenders (HRDs) globally. The organization provides tools and resources that help HRDs manage their own security as they fight against impunity and promote human rights and democracy in their respective countries and regions. PI operates with a presence in several African, Asian, and Latin American countries, and its global office is in Brussels.

General Objective of the Role

The Resource Mobilisation Coordinator will play a key role in executing PI’s Financial Resilience & Sustainability Strategy. This includes cultivating core donor relationships, securing funding from diverse sources, and managing effective communication with donors. The role is vital in ensuring PI’s financial sustainability and expanding its mission to support HRDs globally.

The coordinator will collaborate with regional hubs and country offices to create compelling proposals and impact reports and represent PI in key donor meetings, external networks, and high-level forums.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Fundraising and Resource Mobilisation (80%)

  • Implement the Financial Resilience and Sustainability Strategy in alignment with PI’s Strategic Framework (2024-2028).
  • Identify and pursue diverse funding opportunities, particularly for core/unrestricted funding from institutional donors, private foundations, corporate partners, and lotteries.
  • Develop strategic funding concept notes and proposals in collaboration with regional hubs and country offices, ensuring alignment with donor priorities.
  • Manage global reporting for core donors, showcasing PI’s impact across various countries of intervention.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with both current and prospective donors.
  • Coordinate with Finance and Administration Unit to create budgets and accurate funding forecasts for proposals.
  • Explore opportunities for forming consortia for large-scale initiatives with strategic stakeholders and academic partners.
  • Represent PI at key donor meetings, external working groups, and high-level forums.
  • Propose innovative fundraising techniques and strategies to diversify funding streams.
  • Track and report donor funds and maintain up-to-date donor engagement records.

2. Programme Coordination Support (20%)

  • Assist regional offices and country programmes in resource mobilisation and donor reporting for complex or strategic projects, especially in Africa and Asia.
  • Collaborate with regional fundraising consultants to align strategies across PI’s global operations.
  • Support annual income forecasts and ensure budget monitoring in collaboration with the Programme Coordination Unit (PCU).
  • Act as the focal point for large-scale, multi-country initiatives, particularly involving EU proposals.
  • Provide fundraising training and best practices support to regional offices and country teams.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in international relations, development studies, communications, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • 5 to 9 years of experience with INGOs in programming, institutional fundraising, managing donor relations, and donor communications.
  • Proven experience in developing successful proposals for institutional donors, including the EU and Ministries of Foreign Affairs (e.g., NORAD, SIDA, DANIDA, MFA Canada, etc.).
  • Experience in cultivating relationships with private/philanthropic foundations and donor-advised funds.
  • Experience with major donors, ultra-high-net-worth individuals, and the corporate sector is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Human Rights-Based Approaches (HRBA) and programmatic experience in human rights, women’s rights, youth programming, and policy advocacy.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Familiarity with donor compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Experience with donor management software (e.g., Good Grants, Salesforce).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in multicultural settings.
  • Ability to lead complex proposal development and master logical frameworks.
  • Digital marketing and online fundraising campaign experience is a plus.
  • Graphic design and visual content creation skills (Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator) are an asset.

Languages

  • Proficiency in English (written and oral) is mandatory.
  • Proficiency in French, Spanish, or Dutch is highly desirable.

Other Requirements

  • Ideally based in Brussels, or authorized to work in Belgium or the EU.
  • Candidates from outside the EU are welcome to apply if authorized to work in their country of residence.
  • Occasional travel (2-3 trips per year) may be required.

  • Salary: €3,800 – €4,400 gross monthly (for candidates based in Brussels), adjusted for candidates based in other countries.
