Organizational Context

Founded by two Black women in the aftermath of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, African Futures Lab (AfaLab) works to advance demands for racial justice for Africans and Afro-descended people. The organization seeks to address and repair global racial injustices through research, “Mobilization Labs,” and advocacy, specifically focusing on the intersection of race, gender, climate justice, and socio-economic inequalities.

AfaLab’s initiatives aim to hold states and private actors accountable for the lasting effects of colonialism and slavery, particularly focusing on racial justice for Black women in both Africa and Europe.

Project Context

This project addresses the persistence of harmful stereotypes regarding Black women, particularly in relation to fertility, poverty, and modernity, which have been perpetuated by political leaders in Europe, including France. These representations have their origins in colonialism and slavery and continue to affect Black women today. This project will document the persistence of racial prejudice against Black women, highlighting the dual violence they experience at the intersection of race and gender.

Through qualitative and quantitative research, the project seeks to raise awareness and challenge public perceptions, policy decisions, and social practices that continue to contribute to the marginalization of Black women in Europe and Africa.

The research will focus on:

  • Colonial-era perceptions of African women by colonial administrations and European populations.
  • The colonial legal, political, and social measures that affected African women.
  • The ongoing impact of colonial stereotypes in both European and African contexts.
  • The present-day consequences for Black women’s social, political, and economic lives.

Research Objectives

The research will focus on:

  • Analyzing colonial-era views and measures targeting African women.
  • Investigating the contemporary impact of these stereotypes on Black women’s daily lives.
  • Understanding the persistence of these stereotypes in public policies today.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: PhD in social sciences (qualitative and/or quantitative), including disciplines such as history, law, sociology, anthropology, political science, and economics.
  • Thematic Expertise: Experience in gender studies, historical and contemporary racial injustices.
  • Research Experience: Proven experience in qualitative and/or quantitative social science research, including field research. Experience in operational research is also required.
  • Writing Skills: Excellent writing skills demonstrated by a record of publications.
  • Language Skills: Fluent in English.
