Fully-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Governance & Sustainability at Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University invites applications for a prestigious Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. This fellowship is jointly hosted by the School of Accountancy (SoA) (Prof. George Nel) and the Stellenbosch Business School (SBS) (Prof. Nicolene Wesson). It offers an excellent opportunity for researchers interested in governance and sustainability reporting. The program aims to analyze the role of governance in ensuring ethical corporate culture, sustainable performance, and credible reporting.

Who Can Apply?

  • Candidates with a doctoral degree in a related field, conferred within the last five years.
  • Applicants with a strong research background in governance, finance, econometrics, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Open to international and domestic candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Hold a doctoral degree in a related discipline, obtained within the last five years.
  • Have a proven research record, including:
    • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Conference presentations.
    • Experience supervising postgraduate students.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Show expertise in corporate governance and its practical applications.
  • Have working knowledge of manual and automated content analysis (e.g., textual analysis software).
  • Be skilled in using statistical packages such as SPSS, Stata, Eviews and databases like Bloomberg and IRESS.
  • Candidates with professional accounting designations (CA(SA), ACCA/FCCA, CIMA/CGMA) will have an added advantage.

Program Details

  • Start Date: 1 June 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter)
  • Duration: 1 year (with potential extension based on performance and funding availability)
  • Location: Stellenbosch University, South Africa
  • Financial Benefits:
    • Annual fellowship of R350,000 (tax-free).
    • Additional performance-based award of up to R50,000.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Publish at least two high-quality research papers annually in accredited journals.
    • Present research at a minimum of two seminars/colloquia per year.
    • Assist in supervision/co-supervision of postgraduate students.
    • Support the organization of research workshops, conferences, and events.
    • Teach for a maximum of 20 hours per month.
