The ICANN Fellowship Program 2025: Empowering the Next Generation of Global Internet Leaders

The ICANN Fellowship Program is a unique initiative designed to foster a more diverse, inclusive, and robust multistakeholder model for internet governance. By providing opportunities for individuals from underserved and underrepresented communities to engage actively in the ICANN community, the program plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the global Internet.

About the ICANN Fellowship Program

The primary goal of the ICANN Fellowship Program is to provide a platform for new voices to contribute to the governance and policy-making processes that affect the Internet on a global scale. The program offers participants the chance to engage with ICANN’s multi-faceted work in areas such as policy development, the operation of the Domain Name System (DNS), and ensuring the security and stability of the global Internet infrastructure.

Through this fellowship, participants gain a comprehensive exposure to the workings of the ICANN community. They receive tailored mentorship, engage in skill-building training, and enjoy support to attend ICANN Public Meetings. Fellows also benefit from travel assistance to attend these meetings, enabling them to network with experts, contribute to discussions, and actively participate in shaping policy decisions that impact the Internet’s future.

The program is open to individuals from diverse backgrounds, offering the opportunity to contribute to and learn from the global community. Fellows from all corners of the world, including those from developing regions, are invited to apply, bringing new perspectives to the table and ensuring that Internet governance is truly representative of the global population.

Eligibility Criteria for the Fellowship Program

The ICANN Fellowship Program welcomes applications from individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of applying.
  • Interest in ICANN’s Work: Applicants should be interested in or already engaged in ICANN’s policy-building, DNS operations, and ensuring global Internet security and stability.
  • Completion of ICANN Learn Courses: Applicants are required to complete the mandatory ICANN Learn course(s) before applying. This is designed to provide foundational knowledge of ICANN’s work and initiatives.
  • Previous Fellowships: Applicants can apply for the fellowship only if they have received no more than two fellowships. Those applying for a second or third fellowship must demonstrate their continued engagement in ICANN’s communities.
  • No Conflicting Travel Programs: At the time of selection, candidates must not be involved in or associated with any other ICANN-supported travel programs.

Special awards are also available for specific candidates. For example, individuals based in the African region with a technical background may be eligible for the Paul Muchene Fellow Award, a recognition of a fellow who made significant contributions to the program before passing away in 2022. Additionally, fellows who have shown outstanding contributions to capacity development in their region can be considered for the Tarek Kamel Fellowship Recognition.

Requirements for Fellowship Participants

Fellows selected for the program are expected to actively engage in the following activities:

  • Mentoring: Fellows will be paired with experienced mentors to guide them throughout the fellowship.
  • Training: Participants will complete additional ICANN Learn courses that build on their knowledge and expertise.
  • Attend ICANN Public Meetings: Fellows must attend ICANN meetings and participate in mandatory activities, including Fellowship sessions.
  • Networking: Fellows will interact with other fellows, alumni, and community members to build long-lasting professional relationships.
  • Post-Meeting Survey: After the meeting, fellows must complete a survey to provide feedback and reflect on their experiences.

Moreover, the program encourages fellows to actively contribute to ICANN’s policy development processes and continue their engagement with the Fellowship Alumni Network after completing the fellowship.

How to Apply for the Fellowship Program

The application process for the ICANN Fellowship Program is straightforward. Interested candidates must first ensure they have an ICANN Account. Once the application round opens, individuals can submit their applications before the deadline.

If the meeting is held virtually, the fellowship program will also be conducted virtually, incorporating all the key elements, including training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, but in a virtual setting.
