Position Overview:
Equality Now is seeking a Regional Communications Officer to join our dynamic team, based in Southern Africa. This new position will focus on driving impactful communication strategies, managing advocacy campaigns, and amplifying Equality Now’s work in the region. As the communications representative in the Southern Africa campaign team, the Regional Communications Officer will lead digital, media, and public engagement efforts to support the organization’s goals.
This role is ideal for an individual with at least 5 years of experience in advocacy communications and a strong understanding of digital communications strategies. The successful candidate should be self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently while contributing to a global team. You will be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously, develop effective messaging, and establish relationships with key stakeholders to influence policy and effect change.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning and Implementation:
- Collaborate with the program and communications teams to develop communication plans aligned with ongoing campaigns, including those focused on the SADC Campaign on Ending Child Marriage and the Campaign on the Nationality Rights Protocol in Southern Africa.
- Ensure that all communications activities align with the global communications framework and regional strategies.
- Support the Regional Communications Manager in budgeting and advising on communications activities for program proposals.
- Campaign and Activity Planning:
- Plan and execute impactful communications activities, including events, webinars, conferences, and influencer engagements.
- Develop engaging, factually accurate content for multiple channels, including social media, press releases, op-eds, and newsletters.
- Lead media and digital amplification during key events and campaigns.
- Media and Public Engagement:
- Build and maintain a network of media contacts across Southern Africa, including journalists, editors, and international media outlets.
- Lead media outreach efforts by writing press releases, pitching stories, and securing positive media coverage.
- Organize media training workshops, journalist story-gathering sessions, and media cafes to strengthen reporting on gender equality issues.
- Digital Communications:
- Develop content for social media platforms to engage audiences, build movements, and enhance advocacy.
- Create content that supports advocacy objectives and builds Equality Now’s credibility in the region.
- Curate social media campaigns, digital activations, and online movement-building initiatives in alignment with program goals.
- Stakeholder and Partner Engagement:
- Strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, human rights bodies, and government actors.
- Collaborate with national and international partners to amplify their work via Equality Now’s platforms.
- Administrative Support:
- Assist in the preparation of reports in line with donor requirements.
- Manage outsourced services, develop Terms of References (ToRs), and track communication impact and performance metrics.
Qualifications:
- Experience: At least 5 years of experience in advocacy communications, media relations, and digital campaigns within international organizations or NGOs.
- Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience creating compelling content for various digital platforms.
- Regional Knowledge: Deep understanding of regional dynamics in Southern and Eastern Africa, with an ability to create culturally sensitive and relevant communications.
- Media Relations: Established network of media contacts in Southern Africa, with experience in media outreach, story pitching, and securing media coverage.
- Digital Expertise: Proficient in leveraging digital platforms for advocacy and movement-building, with experience in content creation and social media engagement.
- Event Management: Experience organizing and executing high-impact events such as webinars, conferences, and media workshops.
- Personal Attributes: Creative, innovative, solution-driven, and adaptable with strong interpersonal and relationship management skills.
Education and Certifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience with project management and communications strategy development.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary: $32,000 – $36,000 annually (depending on location, qualifications, and experience).
