Overview
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is offering a traineeship opportunity with the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU). This position provides recent graduates or current students an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience in a multicultural environment while enhancing their understanding of the United Nations system.
MDPU works closely with governments, universities, and international organizations to design and deliver training activities. The unit also manages online training programs, special projects, advisory services, and creates other tools and publications for training. Trainees will assist in the preparation and execution of both Field Visits and Online Training Programs scheduled primarily for July and August 2025.
This unpaid traineeship provides a monthly lump-sum of 900 CHF to cover transportation and miscellaneous costs. The position is located at UNITAR’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
About the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme
The MDPU aims to strengthen multilateralism, international cooperation, and global solidarity. The unit develops face-to-face and online training activities, such as:
- Field Visits (1-2 weeks): Participants experience Geneva’s multilateral environment, including expert lectures, workshops, UN agency visits, multilateral conferences, and cultural activities.
- Online Training Programmes (2-4 weeks): Fully virtual programs offered through UNITAR’s e-Learning platform, incorporating e-learning modules, live webinars, e-workshops, and virtual guided tours.
Responsibilities
The selected trainee will support the Associate Programme Officer in organizing and delivering Field Visits and Online Training Programmes. Key tasks include:
- Logistics Coordination: Assist in planning and organizing logistics before, during, and after the training programs.
- Facilitation Support: Help facilitate live components of the online training and support face-to-face sessions.
- Participant Liaison: Communicate with partner institutions, collect participant information, and ensure smooth onboarding.
- Content Management: Manage and update content on the e-Learning platform and assist with program materials.
- Outreach & Communication: Support the program’s outreach strategy and enhance its visibility.
- Field Visits Support: Accompany participants during field visits to Geneva, ensuring a positive and informative experience.

Duration and Start Date

Minimum Requirements
To be eligible, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate program in international relations, education, history, law, political science, languages, or related fields.
- Skills and Experience:
- High organizational capacity and excellent time-management skills.
- Experience organizing field visits, guiding tours, or coordinating similar activities.
- Familiarity with online training programs, events, or related activities.
- Strong social, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of the United Nations System and international affairs.
- Adherence to UN values and principles of cooperation, respect, and solidarity.
- Additional Skills (Optional but Beneficial):
- Expertise in digital marketing and social media platforms.
- Strong strategic marketing and partnership management skills.
- Familiarity with Mandarin Chinese is an asset.
