Job Overview:
UNDP is seeking a Nature and Gender Specialist to support the implementation of its Nature Pledge with a particular focus on the Sahel region in Africa. This is a unique opportunity to integrate gender equality with nature conservation in UNDP’s efforts to drive sustainable development and biodiversity protection.
The Nature and Gender Specialist will work closely with UNDP’s Global Nature Pledge Coordinator, the Regional Gender Team, and other relevant stakeholders to advance gender-responsive, nature-based solutions in the context of environmental sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Guidance, Communication, and Advocacy:
- Provide strategic guidance on the implementation of the Nature Pledge in the region, focusing on the three system shifts: Value Shift, Economic and Finance Shift, and Policy and Practice Shift.
- Develop and deliver the Nature Pledge Regional Activation Plan for Africa, with a focus on advancing gender equality, economic empowerment, and social cohesion through nature conservation.
- Raise awareness and advocate for the integration of nature and gender equality through communication efforts and stakeholder engagement.
- Building Strategic Partnerships and Resource Mobilization:
- Identify opportunities for integrated action to embed nature into UNDP’s development strategies.
- Establish partnerships with key stakeholders, including women’s rights groups, indigenous communities, governments, civil society, and the private sector to support the Nature Pledge’s goals.
- Contribute to resource mobilization efforts by engaging with potential donors and partners.
- Technical Support for Country Offices:
- Provide technical oversight and guidance on project implementation in countries within the Sahel and other potential pilot countries.
- Ensure alignment with the Nature Pledge’s objectives and offer advice on integrating gender equality and women’s empowerment.
- Support project development, monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management, ensuring quality implementation of projects financed through the UNDP NCE Funding Window.
- Knowledge Sharing, Monitoring, and Capacity Building:
- Contribute to knowledge generation and sharing of best practices related to nature and gender integration in development programs.
- Support monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track progress toward the Nature Pledge objectives.
- Facilitate capacity building activities to strengthen Country Offices’ ability to implement nature-positive initiatives.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Education:
- Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Gender and Development, Sustainability, or related fields.
- Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s) with an additional two years of relevant experience.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience (with a Master’s) or 7 years (with a Bachelor’s) in international development, gender equality, sustainability, and nature-based solutions.
- Demonstrable experience advising and working with developing countries on environmental conservation, biodiversity, and gender equality.
- Experience working in Africa, particularly in Sahel countries, is strongly desired.
- Proven expertise in project development, implementation, management, and high-level advocacy.
- Experience working with UNDP or similar international organizations is highly desirable.
- Languages:
- Fluency in English and French is required.

Additional Information:
- The position will be home-based, requiring reliable internet and self-provided equipment (laptop, phone, etc.).
- The incumbent will report to the Principal Technical Advisor for Integrated Land Management and work closely with the Regional Team Leader for Gender Equality.
- Frequent communication and coordination with various stakeholders, including internal and external partners, will be required.
