About IPPR:

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) is the UK’s leading independent think tank, committed to shaping progressive policies that address societal challenges. IPPR’s research has shaped crucial policy reforms, such as advocating for the minimum wage, developing human rights law, creating the Child Trust Fund, and implementing a windfall tax on energy companies. The organisation continues to push forward with bold, actionable solutions to some of society’s most pressing problems.

Role Overview:

IPPR is seeking a Senior Research Fellow to join our Democracy and Politics team during a critical time in UK politics. This is an exciting opportunity to lead IPPR’s work on reimagining democracy in the face of rising populism and political upheaval. As the UK navigates a new government and a shifting political landscape, progressives are tasked with defending the existing democratic system while exploring fresh ideas for the future.

This position offers an influential and impactful role, combining ideas, policy, and political insight. IPPR has previously provided the groundwork for major constitutional changes, and we aim to repeat this success with the current government, at a time when the stakes are even higher.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to research and policy development focused on the future of democracy in an era marked by populism.
  • Synthesize complex research and translate it into accessible, actionable insights for policymakers, political audiences, and the public.
  • Manage multiple projects, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, impactful work within tight deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a dynamic and ambitious team, contributing to IPPR’s thought leadership on democratic reform.
  • Engage in critical debate and work across various progressive policy issues to promote democratic values and solutions.
  • Foster strong relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, academic institutions, and civil society groups.

About You:

We are looking for a candidate who is inquisitive, imaginative, and proactive. While a degree in politics or democracy is not required, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a strong commitment to democratic values through their work, study, or practical experience. A solid understanding of contemporary populism and its impact on democratic systems is essential.

Key qualities we are looking for include:

  • A questioning attitude, with strong logical reasoning and analytical skills.
  • The ability to think creatively and propose innovative solutions to complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas into clear, accessible formats for diverse audiences.
  • Proven project management skills, with the ability to work efficiently and effectively on multiple projects.
  • A collaborative mindset, able to thrive in an ambitious, fast-paced team environment.

Additional Information:

  • Office Location: IPPR’s London office, based in the heart of Westminster. Staff are expected to be in the office at least 40% of the time.
  • Flexible Working: We are committed to providing flexible working arrangements, including job-sharing or part-time options, which can be discussed during the interview process.

Closing Date for Applications: 9:00am on Monday 31 March 2025
