Environmental Justice in Tech (EJIT) Fellowship – Summer 2025

Join the Movement for Environmental Justice and Technology

Are you passionate about environmental justice and technology? The Environmental Justice in Tech (EJIT) Fellowship offers an exciting and transformative opportunity to dive into the intersection of these two critical fields. In Summer 2025, you can become one of four EJIT Fellows and engage in meaningful projects that aim to advance justice in technology while also building expertise in research, education, and creative intervention.

Fellowship Details:

  • Duration: 12 weeks (June 15 – August 29, 2025; flexible)
  • Time Commitment: ~20 hours per week
  • Location: Remote
  • Compensation: $3,000 stipend (flexible payment schedule)

Project Areas:

Fellows will lead one key project while also contributing to others. The four areas available are:

  1. The Editor // GLITCH Digital Zine:
Curate and lead content creation for a digital zine that explores the relationship between technology and environmental justice. This project focuses on elevating voices and sharing stories that spark dialogue and action on climate justice.
  2. The Researcher // Data Governance & Climate Justice:
Conduct research on how data governance practices impact climate justice efforts. This project will explore the ethical use of data and technology in environmental decision-making, ensuring that these tools serve marginalized communities.
  3. The Educator // Digital Educational Materials:
Develop digital educational resources that bridge the gap between environmental justice and technology. This could involve creating accessible materials for communities, activists, and organizations working on climate change.
  4. The Creative // Creative & Cultural Interventions:
Lead creative projects such as multimedia storytelling, art installations, or community-based interventions that merge culture, creativity, and technology to raise awareness about environmental justice issues.

What We’re Looking For:

applicants who:

  • Have experience with environmental justice through community work, lived experience, or academic study.
  • Possess strong writing and communication skills to convey impactful stories and research.
  • Demonstrate self-motivated project management abilities—being able to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage your own projects.
  • Exhibit a collaborative spirit and thrive in team environments.
  • Are proficient in digital collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and Google Suite.
  • Note: A STEM background is not required. We actively encourage applicants from interdisciplinary and traditionally non-technical fields to apply!

Commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility (IDEAS):

At Rooted Futures Lab, we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable space. We actively encourage applications from individuals of traditionally underrepresented identities. This includes, but is not limited to, people from diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, races, ethnicities, religions, ages, and economic backgrounds.

We believe the most innovative solutions arise when diverse voices and lived experiences converge. The EJIT Fellowship is intentionally designed to provide space for those who have been systematically excluded from both the tech and environmental decision-making sectors. We seek applicants from frontline communities, indigenous knowledge keepers, and interdisciplinary thinkers—especially those with critical lived experience in environmental justice work.

This fellowship is not just about demographic diversity; it’s about reshaping who gets to be involved in shaping our technological futures.
