Democracy by Design at the University of Amsterdam*The University of Amsterdam is offering a PhD position in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) on the topic “Democracy by Design: How App Characteristics Shape Youth Political Worldviews.” The project aims to investigate how smartphone apps influence the political worldviews of young adults.
Job Description
As a PhD candidate, you will be responsible for:
- Conducting a mixed-methods research project, including interviews, surveys, and experiments
- Recruiting participants from schools and universities across the Netherlands- Collecting and analyzing data- Writing scientific articles and presenting research at conferences- Contributing to teaching activities at the Bachelor’s level- Sharing research insights with stakeholders, including EU-level policymakers
Requirements
- A (research) master’s degree in communication science, political science, or a related social science discipline
- Strong affinity with the topic of the PhD project
- An assertive and resourceful personality
- Social and organizational skills- Experience with quantitative research methods and analyses (survey analysis, experiments)
- Programming skills (in R or Python)- Proficiency in Dutch and English
- Experience with data donation is a plus
- Commitment to open science principles, methodological rigor, and scientific integrity
