The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking motivated individuals for an exciting opportunity to join the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Nature Internship. The UNEP FI is a global partnership between UNEP and the private financial sector, working to integrate environmental sustainability into the finance and economic sectors.
As part of the Resources & Markets Branch (UNEP-RMB), this internship aims to promote sustainable financial practices to conserve natural resources, reduce poverty, and foster sustainable development.
Duties and Responsibilities
As an intern, you will work alongside the Nature Lead and Co-Lead on cutting-edge initiatives that link nature and finance, including the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD), Sustainable Blue Economy Finance Initiative (SBEFI), and other critical projects. Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting internal work on aligning financial flows with the Global Biodiversity Framework across topics such as portfolio alignment, biodiversity credits, blue/ocean finance, food systems, and more.
- Conducting research on nature-related finance themes, including metrics, indicators, and data.
- Collecting and analyzing information from various sources such as reports, publications, and webinars.
- Creating presentations, briefing notes, and speaking points based on applied research.
- Providing coordination, administrative, and communications support to ongoing projects.
- Taking initiative on applied research or contributing to innovative areas of interest.
- Assisting the team on ad-hoc tasks as needed.
Qualifications/Skills
- Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s or higher).
- In the final academic year of a first university degree (minimum Bachelor’s level).
- Have graduated within the past year.
- Strong academic background in fields related to ecosystems and finance, such as risk or sustainable finance.
- Exposure to banking, finance, and/or insurance industries is preferred.
- Excellent research, communication, and writing skills in English.
- Experience with data management and analysis, particularly spatial applications, is a plus.
Languages
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
- Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

- Internship Remuneration: This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and living expenses.
- Visa Requirements: If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of Switzerland, you may need to obtain the appropriate visa.
