About the Programme
The Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme is designed for registered doctoral students working on their PhD dissertation or thesis in the field of developing economies. During the programme, fellows will spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER, where they can:

- Work alongside experienced researchers in areas of mutual interest.
- Present their research findings in a seminar.
- Have the opportunity to publish their work in the WIDER Working Paper Series.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Enrolled in a PhD programme.
- Conducting research on developing economies or related fields (note: UNU-WIDER is an economics-focused institute).
- Proficient in both written and spoken English.
- Have strong quantitative or qualitative research skills.
The programme particularly encourages applications from early-career researchers, women, and researchers from developing countries. It’s most suitable for PhD candidates in the later stages of their research.
Financial Assistance
UNU-WIDER provides financial support to fellows in the following ways:
- Travel Grant: Covers travel expenses to and from Helsinki.
- Medical Insurance: Covers health services for sickness and accidents during the fellowship.
- Stipend: A monthly stipend of EUR 2,050 to cover living expenses in Helsinki.
Please note that expenses related to dependents are not covered.
Application Procedure
Applications for the Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme are accepted online only twice a year. The application deadlines are:
- 31 March (for fellowships in September–November of the same year).
- 30 September (for fellowships in March–June of the following year).
- The application link will be active one month before the submission deadline (i.e., 1 March and 1 September).
- The selected applicants will be notified via email within four weeks of the application deadline.
