Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Dakar is hiring a Junior Research Fellow: Apply!
The ISS seeks a junior research fellow for a position in the ISS Regional Office for West Africa and the Sahel, based in Dakar, Senegal. The position is open to Senegalese nationals. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of a senior researcher.
The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) works with partners to build knowledge and skills that enable sustainable peace, development and prosperity in Africa. Established in 1991, the ISS is Africa’s leading multidisciplinary human security organisation, with a unique operational model that combines research, policy analysis, technical assistance and training. The ISS has also developed a powerful forecasting capability to identify future risks and opportunities in fields as diverse as development, industrialisation, demographics, technology and climate change.

Headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa, the organisation has regional offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Dakar, Senegal and Nairobi, Kenya. Our work covers African futures, transnational crimes, climate change, migration, maritime security and development, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, crime prevention and criminal justice, and the analysis of conflict and governance. Using our networks and influence, we provide timely and credible analysis, practical training and technical assistance to governments and civil society. This promotes better policy and practice, because senior officials can make informed decisions about how to deal with Africa’s human security challenges.
Overview of duties
- Â Assist the research team with background research
- Design and undertake desk and field research
- Â Assist with the preparation and organisation of workshops
- Attend seminars/workshops/conferences and prepare relevant reports
- Prepare minutes of meetings
- Conduct and present a weekly review of political and security developments in Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea
- Write policy articles
- Undertake additional tasks as required by the projectÂ
Overview of requirements
- A national of Senegal
- Under 30 years of age
- Master’s degree in anthropology, sociology, politics, law, international relations or a related field
- Good organisational skills, self-motivated and reliable
- Interest in and knowledge of security, governance, terrorism and violent extremism
- Fluent in either English or French (written and spoken); a good command of English or French, and one or more local languages would be an asset
- Good computer skills (Microsoft Office, internet applications and Prezi)
- Ability to work under pressure in a multicultural environment
The contract will be for 12 months, and a monthly stipend will be offered.
