Study in Australia: John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) – Applications Open for 2026 Intake

The John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) is a prestigious and competitive scholarship program that offers scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries an opportunity to pursue formal postgraduate qualifications at an Australian tertiary institution. This fellowship plays a key role in strengthening scientific research capabilities and fostering international collaborations, aiming to create impactful research that addresses global challenges.

About the John Allwright Fellowship (JAF)

The JAF is the largest investment in ACIAR’s Capacity Development Program. It provides Masters by Research or PhD scholarships to agricultural researchers, helping to build the capacity of individuals and institutions in ACIAR partner countries. By offering financial support and developmental opportunities, the fellowship enhances participants’ diverse skill sets and equips them to contribute to high-quality, sustainable research upon completion of their studies.

With over 39 JAFs currently enrolled across 15 Australian universities, the fellowship has already made a significant impact on the academic and professional journeys of numerous researchers.

In line with ACIAR’s Gender Equity Policy and Strategy, which aims for gender parity in its capacity development program, women now make up at least half of the new JAFs.

Focus on Climate Change Research

Given the growing challenges of climate change, agriculture, fisheries, and food systems are increasingly vulnerable to environmental shifts, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. As global food demand rises, the need for climate-resilient agricultural practices becomes critical. In response to this urgent need, JAF is dedicating places in the 2026 intake for research that addresses climate change, climate adaptation, or building resilience to its impacts.

Applicants are encouraged to consider the role of climate change in their proposed research and action plans.
