Background:
The Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action (GAGGA) is a dynamic and diverse network established in 2016, comprising women’s funds, environmental justice organizations, NGOs, and women-led community-based organizations (CBOs). GAGGA strives to strengthen the intersection of women’s rights, climate, and environmental justice at local, national, and regional levels globally. GAGGA works towards promoting the leadership, resilience, and agency of women while advocating for gender-just climate solutions. The organization’s mission includes influencing governments, investors, and donors to divest from fossil fuel industries, protect ecosystems, and support sustainable, gender-just climate solutions.
To evaluate the impacts of its initiatives, GAGGA utilizes the Most Significant Change (MSC) methodology every two years. The network now seeks an experienced Qualitative Researcher to analyze approximately 200 MSC stories, uncover key trends, and document compelling individual stories for advocacy purposes.
Objective:
The primary objective of this assignment is to conduct a qualitative analysis of MSC stories collected from stakeholders, identify patterns, themes, and trends, and assess how these align with GAGGA’s mission to advocate for and resource gender-just climate solutions. The research should highlight standout stories for communications, fundraising, and advocacy purposes.
Scope of Work:
The Qualitative Researcher will be responsible for the following:
- Review and Familiarisation:
- Understand the MSC methodology applied in GAGGA’s context and its relevance to GAGGA’s Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) framework.
- Familiarize with the data collection platform, the context of the stories, and the Theory of Change (TOC) framework used by GAGGA.
- Qualitative Analysis:
- Conduct a thematic analysis of the MSC stories using appropriate qualitative research methods.
- Identify recurring themes, patterns, and nuances within the data.
- Highlight interconnections between gender justice, climate justice, environmental activism, and community transformation.
- Reporting and Recommendations:
- Provide a comprehensive report detailing the analysis, findings, key insights, and recommendations.
- Create a summarized report for partners and donors.
- Include visualizations such as word clouds and thematic maps to support the findings.
Deliverables:
- Inception Report: Outline methodology, tools, and work plan (due within the first two weeks).
- Draft Analysis Report: Preliminary findings and key themes.
- Final Report: A comprehensive report (around 10 pages), incorporating feedback.
- Visualizations: At least 3-4 types of data visualizations.
- Presentation: A summary of findings for GAGGA stakeholders and external audiences (e.g., donors).
Duration:
The assignment will span 2 months, from 1st March 2025 to 31st April 2025. The deliverables will be spread across this period.
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, or related fields.
- 5-7 years of experience in qualitative research, analysis, and reporting.
- Expertise in participatory methods and narrative analysis.
- Strong understanding of gender, climate, and environmental justice frameworks.
- Proficiency in qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti) is an advantage.
- Ability to visualize qualitative data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (additional languages are a plus).
Reporting and Coordination:
The researcher will report directly to the Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (PMEL) Officer at GAGGA and work closely with relevant team members.
