The African Union’s Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) is excited to announce the Call for Applications for National ECOSOCC Chapters (NECs). This initiative is a vital framework designed to enhance accountability, promote grassroots engagement, and mobilize support for the African Union’s programs and activities.
Why National ECOSOCC Chapters Matter
The establishment of National ECOSOCC Chapters is rooted in Executive Council Decisions EX/CL/Dec. 869 (XXVI)and EX/CL 924 (XXVI), which recognize these chapters as essential for:
- Ensuring accountability of elected ECOSOCC members.
- Serving as conduits for disseminating information and mobilizing support for African Union programs.
- Facilitating broad and meaningful participation of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) across all regions and groups.
Operating as an extension of ECOSOCC, National Chapters are tasked with:
- Bringing the African Union closer to the grassroots.
- Supporting, implementing, and monitoring ECOSOCC activities at the national level.
- Promoting public engagement with AU initiatives, including Agenda 2063, annual themes, thematic events, and AU commemorative days.
A Landmark Framework
In February 2023, during the 42nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, the National Chapter Framework was formally adopted. Following a successful pilot-testing phase, ECOSOCC is ready to scale this initiative across all African Union Member States.
