Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP): Applications Now Open for 2025 (fully-funded & open to developing countries)

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) invites citizens from select developing countries with relevant professional experience and a proven track record in supporting their nations’ development efforts to apply for scholarships for master’s degree programs in development-related fields.
About the Program:
The JJ/WBGSP offers scholarships for 41 participating master’s programs across 24 universities in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. Focus areas include economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
Application Periods:
To accommodate varying academic calendars, the application process is organized into two rounds:
- Window 1: Opens January 13, 2025, and closes February 28, 2025, at 12:00 PM (EST).
- Window 2: Opens March 25, 2025, and closes May 23, 2025, at 12:00 PM (EST).
Only candidates unconditionally admitted to one of the JJ/WBGSP’s participating master’s programs are eligible to apply. Admitted applicants will receive the application link directly from the respective universities.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a World Bank member developing country (refer to the eligible countries list).
- Not hold dual citizenship in any developed country.
- Be in good health.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) earned at least three years prior to the application deadline.
- Have at least three years of paid, development-related work experience (exceptions apply for individuals from fragile or conflict-affected states).
- Be unconditionally admitted to one of the participating programs outside their country of citizenship and residence before the application deadline.
- Meet all eligibility requirements outlined in the program’s detailed guidelines.
Scholarship Benefits:
The JJ/WBGSP covers:
- Economy-class airfare between the scholar’s home country and the host university (plus a $600 travel allowance).
- Tuition fees and basic medical insurance through the university.
- A monthly living stipend for accommodation, food, and other expenses.
Selection Process:
Applications are independently reviewed by two assessors based on:
- Quality of Professional Experience (30%).
- Quality of Recommendations (30%).
- Commitment to Home Country (30%).
- Educational Background (10%).
Finalists are chosen based on merit, geographical distribution, gender balance, financial need, and unique circumstances.
