The call for applications for the 2nd Cohort of the Network of African Women in Conflict Prevention and Mediation (FemWise-Africa) at the continental level is an exciting opportunity for qualified women in Africa committed to peacebuilding and mediation.
Overview
FemWise-Africa was established under the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) to implement initiatives in line with:
- UNSCR 1325 Women, Peace, and Security Agenda (2000).
- The Maputo Protocol (2003).
- The Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (2004).
It operates through three pillars: Membership, Deployment, and Capacity Building, focusing on activities such as early warning initiatives, conflict resolution, dialogue, and the promotion of women’s substantive participation in peace processes.
Key Activities for Members
- Advocacy for women’s participation in conflict prevention, mediation, and peace processes.
- Training and mentorship for women mediators to prepare for peace-related assignments.
- Providing expertise and support for the AU Panel of the Wise.
- Participating in AU and global peacebuilding forums.
- Documenting and disseminating best practices in conflict resolution.
Eligibility Criteria for Continental Membership
- Identity: African women citizens living in Africa.
- Education: At least a Bachelor’s degree.
- Languages: Working proficiency in one AU official language (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, or Swahili).
- Experience: Minimum of five years in conflict mediation, negotiation, or peacebuilding (supported by 2-3 concrete examples).
- Thematic Expertise: Additional experience in one or more thematic areas, including:
- Ceasefire negotiations and security arrangements.
- Gender and inclusion in peace processes.
- Governance and constitution-making.
- Power-sharing.
- Climate change and natural resource management.
- Transitional justice and reconciliation.
- Commitment: Adherence to FemWise-Africa’s Code of Conduct and willingness to participate in Network activities.
