Background

The internship is located at the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn, Germany, within the Adaptation Division, specifically the Vulnerability Sub-division. The division focuses on understanding the impacts of climate change and facilitating adaptation strategies for various sectors and groups, managing adaptation knowledge, and promoting information sharing.

The Vulnerability Sub-division consists of two units:

  1. NWP Unit: Supports the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation.
  2. LCIPP Unit: Supports the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform.

Interns will report to the Team Lead of the NWP unit, contributing to the Nairobi Work Programme’s initiatives.

Objective and Responsibilities

The intern will provide support across various tasks, including:

  • Research and Analytical Tasks:
    • Compile and analyze documents for knowledge products.
    • Conduct quantitative data analysis and literature reviews.
  • Event and Meeting Support:
    • Organize and assist with workshops and outreach events related to the Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI).
    • Attend and assist in other relevant meetings to understand the workings of the UNFCCC.
  • Content Curation:
    • Manage content on the NWP Adaptation Knowledge Portal and other UNFCCC pages.
    • Create videos, audio, and infographics to communicate the division’s work to a wider audience.
  • Communication and Outreach:
    • Assist with social media communication, newsletters, and post-event summaries.
    • Conduct surveys to understand users’ knowledge needs and measure the uptake of NWP products.
  • Additional Support:
    • Help the Vulnerability Sub-division manager and Adaptation Division director with tasks as needed.

Timeframe

  • Minimum Duration: 3 months
  • Maximum Duration: 6 months
  • Internship period: January 2025 to April 2026 (specific dates depending on intern’s availability).

Minimum Requirements

  • Educational Background:
    • Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree (minimum) or graduate program.
    • Studies in climate change, environmental studies, political science, economics, or related fields are an asset.
  • Skills:
    • Experience with infographics, photography, videography, and social media is preferred.
    • Communication skills, especially in writing and social media outreach.
  • Language:
    • Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Work Environment:
    • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, multidisciplinary environment.

Computer Requirements

  • Laptop/Desktop:
    • Must have Windows 10 or newer, or the latest macOS.
  • Software & Tools:
    • Office 365 license provided by UNFCCC for official communication and collaboration.
    • Antivirus software with regular updates.
    • Compatible browsers and regular updates enabled.
    • A mobile phone for multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Internship Conditions

  • Unpaid: Interns are responsible for their costs.
  • Remote Work: Full- or part-time options (20–40 hours/week).
