Background

In partnership with the Royal Commission for AlUla (Saudi Arabia), UNESCO is developing initiatives to promote intercultural dialogue and learning at museums and heritage sites, focusing on the “Fostering Positive Social Transformations in AlUla” project. This project aims to create a global cultural destination and Living Museum, with a focus on heritage as a tool for fostering intercultural understanding.

This role will support the creation of a publication that explores how museums and heritage sites can be spaces for intercultural dialogue and learning, using methods like UNESCO’s Story Circles methodology. The publication will provide guidelines for museums globally to foster intercultural competencies through heritage and arts.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist and coordination with the project team, the Individual Specialist will:

  1. Lead the Development of a Publication:
    • Design a publication focused on the role of museums and heritage sites in promoting intercultural learning.
    • Examine existing case studies and develop future guidance.
    • Ensure the publication outlines intercultural learning approaches, methodologies, and successful case studies.
    • Provide a framework for assessing the impact of visitor experiences designed during the project.
    • Draft a structured methodology for replicating intercultural visitor experiences across cultural contexts.
  2. Research and Content Creation:
    • Conduct literature reviews, interviews, and synthesize information for the publication.
    • Develop case studies demonstrating successful intercultural initiatives.
    • Attend the Intercultural Training Week in Paris (17-21 February 2025) and gather material for the publication.
  3. Delivery and Finalization:
    • Submit a draft of the publication by 31 December 2025.
    • Incorporate feedback from the UNESCO team, including internal and external reviews.
    • Finalize the draft, ensuring adherence to UNESCO’s publishing standards.

Expected Deliverables

  1. Introduction: Justification for the role of museums in intercultural dialogue.
  2. Existing Approaches: Description of methods and frameworks in intercultural learning.
  3. Global Initiatives: Overview of intercultural learning initiatives at museums and heritage sites.
  4. Case Studies: Identification of 3-5 successful global case studies with evidence-based impacts.
  5. Visitor Experience Methodology: Structured algorithm for creating intercultural experiences.
  6. Recommendations: Practical guidance for museums and heritage sites to foster intercultural dialogue.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., intercultural education, museum studies, anthropology, etc.).
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of professional experience in intercultural learning and education, with hands-on experience in designing and delivering intercultural training.
  • Skills:
    • Advanced knowledge of intercultural competence frameworks and methodologies.
    • Strong qualitative research and interviewing skills.
    • Excellent drafting and editing skills in English.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multicultural teams.
  • Languages: Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Education: PhD in a relevant field.
  • Languages: Knowledge of Arabic or other UN languages is a plus.

Additional Information

  • The selected candidate will be expected to work remotely for most of the contract and travel to Paris for the Intercultural Training Week in February 2025 (travel expenses covered by UNESCO).
