Objectives of the Programme
The Epidemiology Fellowship Programme in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EpiFellows) is aimed at building the capacity of young epidemiologists from low- and middle-income countries in the region. Fellows will be assigned to WHO country offices in their home countries for a six-month period.
The fellowship program’s goals are to enhance the fellows’ skills, knowledge, and understanding of national, regional, and global outbreak management by engaging them in WHO’s technical programs.
The programme includes the following objectives:
- To provide a framework for young epidemiologists from low- and middle-income countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, enhancing their educational experience through practical, hands-on assignments.
- To offer direct exposure to WHO’s work, allowing fellows to gain practical experience by working under the supervision of experienced WHO staff.
Description of Duties
Under the guidance of a technical expert in the respective area, fellows will be assigned projects based on agreed-upon terms of reference aligned with their skill sets. These responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing literature and conducting literature surveys
- Undertaking web research, data collection, and analysis on specific subject areas
- Organizing and analyzing data
- Contributing to the development of tools and guidance documents
- Assisting in drafting, formatting, and editing policy briefs, toolkits, guides/manuals, hand-outs, brochures, and reports
- Assisting in organizing workshops, meetings, conferences, and events
- Participating in ongoing departmental projects
Required Qualifications
Education:
A postgraduate degree in a field relevant to public health, outbreak management, and epidemiology.
Skills:
Fellows should demonstrate the following core competencies in line with the WHO global Competencies model:

- Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing
- Moving forward in a changing environment
In addition, fellows must be proficient in commonly used computer programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of specialized programs, such as statistical software like XLStat, is an advantage.
Experience:
Depending on the area of interest, two years of experience is required in any of the following areas:
- Research and/or drafting reports
- Subject-area expertise through academic work or research
- Field or developing-country experience
- Data analysis, statistical packages, and health information display and analysis in an international comparative context, particularly for health system performance assessments
Fellows should also be familiar with basic computer programs, and specialized knowledge of software such as XLStat may be an asset.
Languages:
Fluency in English (reading, writing, and speaking) is required. Knowledge of French or Arabic is an asset.

- The fellowship is competitive, with only a small number of applicants selected each year.
- Selected candidates will receive a monthly fellowship stipend and official travel to the duty station.
- Fellows are not eligible for appointment to any WHO position for three months after the fellowship ends.
