Data Scientist – Join IPA’s Global Research and Data Science Team (Kenya, Ghana, Colombia, Mexico, Nigeria): Apply!!

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is seeking a passionate Data Scientist to join its global research and data science (GRDS) team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on global development through innovative data science. The Data Scientist will collaborate with an international team to drive technical innovation, develop research methods, and apply machine-learning techniques to a range of complex global development projects. Expertise in Python, SQL, and cloud computing will be instrumental in transforming complex data into actionable insights, advancing IPA’s mission of improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 60% Technical Development & Data Modeling:
  • Develop and maintain SQL and Python data models for research applications.
  • Create original code for research and data software solutions.
  • Provide feedback and conduct code reviews to ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Contribute to GRDS research resources, ensuring timely and effective project management.
  • 40% Project Support & Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Provide direct technical assistance to IPA’s research projects, working closely with country offices, sector programs, policy teams, and the Right-fit Evidence units.
  • Develop and present project updates, including weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports, for internal IPA stakeholders.
  • Analyze data and present findings to both internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 2+ years of experience in a data science or data engineering role.
  • 1+ years of experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Strong experience in developing Python-based data science projects.
  • Proficiency in SQL for data querying and analytics.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Familiarity with integrating diverse data sources using APIs.
  • Strong ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics).

Preferred:

  • Experience applying NLP techniques and working with Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Jira, Asana).
  • Experience with data engineering tools for ELT (e.g., dlt, SQLMesh, dbt).
  • Knowledge of data science and econometrics software such as R or Stata.
  • Familiarity with research quality standards and best practices in survey data collection.
  • Experience with international development organizations or research institutions.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages: Spanish, French, Swahili (preferred).

Work Model:

  • Hybrid: Remote work + country office environment.
  • International travel (1-2 times per year).

  • Kenya, Ghana, Colombia, Mexico, Nigeria.
