The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority dedicated to promoting sustainable development and advocating for the global environment. UNEP’s Communication Division plays a pivotal role in communicating its core messages, raising environmental awareness, and enhancing UNEP’s global profile.

UNEP is seeking a Managing Editor to join its Communication Division in Nairobi. The selected candidate will report to the Director of the Communication Division, with direct supervision from the Chief of Section (Content Production), and will oversee the Editorial Unit’s content production, ensuring it aligns with UNEP’s strategies and goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Editorial Management:
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the daily operations of the Editorial Unit.
  • Ensure smooth editorial workflows and compliance with content strategy.
  • Manage UNEP’s editorial calendar and collaborate with other communications teams to ensure integrated messaging across platforms.
  1. Content Production:
  • Review, edit, and approve editorial content to ensure adherence to UNEP’s guidelines.
  • Write and edit reports, publications, speeches, newsletters, and web content.
  • Collaborate with senior UNEP officials to craft speeches, speaking notes, and other communication materials.
  • Assist in the development of key messages for major UNEP campaigns and events.
  1. Team Leadership:
  • Lead and inspire a global team of writers and editors, fostering creativity and collaboration.
  • Oversee the recruitment of consultants and UN Volunteers.
  • Manage the Editorial Unit’s budget and ensure compliance with UNEP policies and procedures.
  1. Capacity Building:
  • Assess the impact of editorial work and report on trends and developments in UNEP’s communication.
  • Build and maintain information networks and develop outreach activities.
  • Provide training and guidelines to enhance the writing skills of the editorial team.
  1. Data Analysis and Reporting:
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends, using data visualization tools to support decision-making and reporting.

Competencies:

  • Professionalism: Strong expertise in writing, editing, and producing high-quality reports and media content. Deep knowledge of environmental issues, excellent research and analytical skills, and the ability to monitor progress against milestones.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Able to tailor messages to diverse audiences and engage effectively in two-way communication.
  • Creativity: Proactive in suggesting new ideas and solutions. Encourages innovative approaches to address challenges.
  • Judgment/Decision Making: Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to identify key issues and weigh the implications of various options.

Education:

  • Required: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Journalism, Communication, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Desirable: Additional qualification in data analytics, business analytics, or data science.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in public information, communication, journalism, or related fields, with some experience at the international level.
  • At least 1 year of recent experience producing content on environmental or scientific issues for media, reports, and social media.
  • Proven experience managing international teams of writers and editors.
  • Experience in editing science-based reports and data analytics is highly desirable.

Languages:

  • Required: Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • Desirable: Knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian).

Assessment:

Candidates may be required to complete an assessment exercise, followed by a competency-based interview.

  • Appointment is for an initial period of one (1) year, with the possibility of extension.
