The Research Training Group 2458, “The Dynamics of Demography, Democratic Processes, and Public Policy” (DYNAMICS), invites applications for 10 Doctoral Researcher Positions. This unique program offers a three-year PhD experience that integrates advanced theories and quantitative methods in demography, democracy, and public policy.

About the Program

DYNAMICS is a collaborative initiative between the Department of Social  Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Hertie School, funded by the German Research Foundation. The program is designed to investigate how demographic changes impact democratic processes and policy decisions, as well as how public policies shape demographic developments. Topics of study also include the effects of transboundary crises, such as the global financial crisis and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Research Pillars

Dissertation projects should align with one or more of the following Research Pillars:

  1. Demography and democratic processes
  2. Demography and public policy
  3. Public policy and its effect on demographic behavior

Qualifications and Requirements

We welcome applications from highly qualified graduates in Political Science, Sociology, Demography, Public Policy, International Relations, or related fields who possess strong quantitative skills. Candidates must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) or be nearing completion.

  6. TOEFL score (minimum 250 computer-based, 600 paper-based, or 100 internet-based)
  7. Two letters of recommendation (to be sent separately by referees)
  8. Two writing samples
  9. Names of two potential advisors from the DYNAMICS Principal Investigators
