Call for Applications: The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) 2025-2026 Fellowship Program
The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) invites applications for the 2025-2026 Fellowship Program aimed at early-career researchers from East and West Africa. The program focuses on developing skills in quantitative social science research and impact evaluation through a 16-week in-person fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley (Fall 2025 & Spring 2026) or Northwestern University (Spring 2026 only).
Fellows will have the opportunity to:
- Audit courses in quantitative development research
- Access personalized mentorship to refine their research ideas
- Build connections with peers and experts in the field

- Early Childhood Development
- Youth Livelihoods
Eligibility
To apply for the CEGA Fellowship Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Fluency in English: Strong written and spoken communication skills are required.
- Geographical Requirements: Applicants must be from East or West Africa and have completed secondary education in an African institution.
- Early Career Scholars: Applicants should have recently completed a Master’s degree or PhD, or currently be enrolled in a PhD program in fields such as economics, political science, statistics, epidemiology/public health, education, or other related social sciences. Preference will be given to those who have completed their PhD within the last 8 years.
- Affiliation: Applicants must hold a staff or student position at a research institution (university or research organization) based in East or West Africa, ideally one focused on policy-relevant, quantitative social science research.
Additional Track-Specific Criteria:
- Early Childhood Development (ECD) Track: This track focuses on evaluating programs supporting health, nutrition, safety, and learning for children 0-3 years old. Priority will be given to applicants from Tanzania, Mozambique, and Kenya conducting relevant research in this area.
- Youth Livelihoods Track: Fellows will assess programs aimed at helping young people (ages 16-24) access meaningful work through education, skills training, and comprehensive support. Priority will be given to applicants from Kenya, particularly those conducting research in Mombasa.
Application Materials:
- Personal Statement (1 page): Explain why you’re interested in the CEGA Fellowship, what you aim to achieve, and how you’ll manage the commitment.
- CV/Resume: Highlight relevant academic and quantitative coursework.
- Research Proposal (Max 2 pages): Outline your research project, following the provided template.
- Leave Approval: Include a letter from your supervisor confirming you can take a 4-month leave.
- References: Provide contact details for two references who can speak to your qualifications.
