TaRL Africa Fellowship Programme 2.0: Applications Now Open!

The TaRL Africa Fellowship Programme is designed to strengthen the technical capacity of the TaRL approach across Sub-Saharan Africa by developing leaders of practice. We seek passionate individuals who can drive the TaRL initiative, ensuring that all children acquire foundational skills.

Fellowship Overview

Fellows will gain invaluable hands-on experience and expand their skill sets through a series of capacity-building activities led by TaRL Africa. Over the course of 18 months, participants will dedicate at least 15% of their time (approximately 50 working days) to various fellowship activities, including:

  • Training Workshops: Enhance your TaRL skills through specialized training.
  • Co-Training Opportunities: Collaborate with TaRL Africa and Pratham teams to design and implement TaRL programmes in new locations, gaining exposure to diverse educational contexts.
  • Material Development: Co-design context-specific teaching-learning materials.
  • Methodology Innovations: Learn about the latest innovations in the TaRL approach.
  • Mentoring Capacity Building: Strengthen your mentoring skills while supporting fellow educators.
  • Peer Engagement: Participate in discussions with other Fellows and the TaRL Africa team to address classroom and training challenges.

Fellows will be showcased on the TaRL Africa website and will receive certification as TaRL Trainers upon completing the program. As part of the TaRL Fellow Alumni Programme, graduates will remain active contributors to the TaRL movement.

Fellowship Objectives

The fellowship will cover key modules, including:

  • Instructional support for learners, teachers, parents, and communities
  • Development and testing of contextually appropriate TaRL materials
  • Program design and adaptation of the TaRL approach
  • Capacity building for master trainers and mentors
  • Training planning and execution
  • Monitoring and evaluation of classroom processes
  • Utilizing data for effective TaRL programming

By the end of the fellowship, participants will be able to:

  • Train teams in various locations with a deep understanding of the TaRL approach and its adaptability.
  • Support organizations in building mentorship systems.
  • Champion the TaRL methodology across different contexts.
  • Identify common challenges and provide thought leadership.
  • Assist in-country teams by sharing lessons learned.
  • Empower others to use data for targeted interventions.

Fellow Responsibilities

To successfully graduate and become a certified TaRL trainer, fellows must:

  • Actively participate in the Advanced TaRL training in March 2025 and observe at least one basic training session provided by TaRL Africa.
  • Collaborate with TaRL Africa to create the TaRL program in 1-2 new sub-Saharan African contexts, including potential travel to these countries.
  • Develop and test context-specific materials and methodologies.
  • Support the planning and rollout of training sessions as needed.
  • Ensure quality control by mentoring Master Trainers during implementation.
  • Engage in fellowship meet-ups and collaborative brainstorming sessions.
  • Maintain regular communication with assigned mentors for guidance and support.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, candidates must:

  • Be affiliated with TaRL-implementing organizations.
  • Have a minimum of one year of experience in implementing TaRL programs.
  • Have completed TaRL practice classes and trained other TaRL actors at least once.
  • Show a commitment to the TaRL movement across Africa.
  • Be available to attend all fellowship activities, with a recommendation from their organization confirming their potential for success in the program.

Application Process

The fellowship begins in December 2024, with applications open from November 1 to November 24, 2024.

Applicants must obtain consent from their organization to dedicate 15% of their time over the 18-month fellowship period.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel based on TaRL experience, leadership potential, and commitment to ensuring all children in Africa acquire foundational skills. Successful candidates will be announced in early December 2024.
