The Community College Initiative Program (CCIP) is an exciting U.S. Department of State exchange program, offering a unique one-year, non-degree academic experience at a U.S. community college. Designed to develop technical skills, leadership abilities, and English proficiency, CCIP empowers participants to make meaningful contributions to their communities upon their return. The program focuses on five key areas:
- Academics
- Cultural Exchange
- Service Learning
- Internships
- Leadership & Community Impact Projects
Eligibility Criteria for CCIP
The CCIP is a merit-based program open to applicants who meet the following requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of South Africa, and possess a valid passport issued by the Government of the Republic of South Africa.
- Residency: Currently residing in South Africa.
- Age: Must be 18 years or older by July 1, 2025.
- Education: Must hold a secondary school diploma (Grade 12 or equivalent).
- Academic Experience: Applicants should not have completed more than three years toward a U.S. bachelor’s degree in their chosen field. Priority is given to those with limited post-secondary education.
- Commitment to Field of Study: Demonstrated academic or professional experience in the chosen field of study.
- English Proficiency: Basic working knowledge of English is required.
- Prior Overseas Experience: Priority is given to applicants with no prior U.S. or overseas study experience.
- Visa Eligibility: Must be eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa.
- Program Commitment: Applicants must be mentally and physically prepared (accommodations available if needed) to complete the full program, including activities scheduled during early mornings or evenings.
- Community Commitment: A clear intent to return to South Africa to apply newly acquired skills in their community.
- Program Start Date: Must be available to begin the program in the U.S. from July 2025 through May 2026.
