About the Fellowship
The Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship brings together a diverse community of clean energy and climate change leaders from developing countries. Fellows engage with Yale’s top faculty, researchers, and global authorities like the International Energy Agency to tackle the clean energy transition and climate change challenges.
Program Details
This five-month fellowship offers a comprehensive mix of in-person and remote learning opportunities to develop the next generation of climate leaders.
Yale Orientation Week | April 7-11, 2025
The fellowship kicks off with a week-long orientation at Yale University, where fellows engage with experts to explore climate change and clean energy initiatives. Key centers such as the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture will be featured.
Remote Learning Journeys | May-July 2025
From May through July, fellows will participate in interactive remote sessions with international experts, covering topics such as decarbonization, energy efficiency, climate governance, and clean energy technologies.
Paris Closing Week | September 15-19, 2025
The fellowship concludes with a week in Paris. Fellows will present policy recommendations, network with global stakeholders, and engage with organizations like the International Energy Agency and the OECD.
Faculty and Partners
Fellows engage with a network of Yale faculty and international experts. Program leadership is provided by Paul Simons, Jackson Senior Fellow, and Emma Sky, Director of Yale’s International Leadership Center. Their team supports fellows in navigating the global climate agenda.

Admission is highly competitive. Each cohort of fellows is geographically balanced and represents a wide range of professions, talents, experience, cultures, people, and perspectives.

Application Requirements
- Professional Experience: Applicants should be between five and 10 years into their professional careers, with demonstrated accomplishments at a regional, national, or international level. While there is no maximum age limit, we are looking for young leaders to launch the program.
- Global South Representation: Applicants must be representatives of the Global South. We look forward to welcoming a diverse representation from developing Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America/Caribbean.
- English Proficiency: Applicants must be fluent in English. An excellent command of the English language is essential to successfully participate in the program.
- Availability: Fellows must be available to fully participate in-person for two weeks of the program: the Yale Orientation Week (April 7-11, 2025) and the Paris Closing Week (September 15-19, 2025). Fellows must also be available to participate in five remote learning journeys between May and early July 2025.
Selection Criteria
- Professional Achievement: An established record of achievement in a profession linked to clean energy and climate change. Fellows will be selected from various sectors, including government, entrepreneurship, finance, research, civil society, and media.
- Commitment to Positive Impact: Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to making a positive impact at local, national, or international levels.
- Leadership Potential: We seek individuals who show promise for future leadership in their fields at both national and global levels.
- Networking & Exposure: Candidates should show an eagerness to expand professional networks and benefit from exposure to top global leaders in clean energy and climate change.
Application Process
The application process is entirely online, with no paper forms or fees. All costs for Yale Orientation Week and Paris Closing Week, including airfare, hotels, transfers, and per diem, will be covered.
Applicants are required to submit:
- A résumé/curriculum vitae (maximum three pages)
- A personal statement (maximum 600 words)
- One letter of recommendation
There is also an option to submit a brief video statement.
