About Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030):
Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030) is a coalition of leaders from feminist networks, civil society, and international development across the globe who connect data and evidence with advocacy and action on gender equality.
It is more than 25 years since 189 countries committed to the Beijing Platform for Action by advancing women’s rights. And we have less than 10 years until the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs and their promise of gender equality.
But Equal Measures 2030’s SDG Gender Index shows that not a single country has yet achieved gender equality.
Our Strategic Plan 2020-2025 is founded on the belief that good data can help expose injustice, ignite change, and drive accountability for gender equality. But it can only do so when it is actively used by advocates – especially feminist organisations and movements – and by champions from government, business, media, academia, and beyond. As a collective, we give data power.
Rapid change on gender equality IS possible. Join us to make it happen!
About this Role:
EM2030 is at a critical moment. In late 2023 we evolved to a new ‘global to local’ coalition model, which brings together data-driven advocates for gender equality working across sectors and at global, regional, and country levels. Our new coalition model emphasises participation, non-discrimination, accountability, and transparency. Externally, we know that data-driven advocacy to drive systematic change for gender equality is needed more than ever. At the same time, our coalition members across contexts are facing resource constraints and backlash against their work from anti-rights actors. The 2024 SDG Gender Index shows that backsliding and rollbacks on women’s rights are gathering pace.
As our first Head of Development and External Engagement, you will lead efforts to ensure our coalition has the resources it needs to do its work, including devising a funding strategy, forging philanthropic partnerships, and collaborating across the coalition to meet funding targets. Your work on partnership building and fundraising will be rooted in an understanding of external engagement approaches including networking, relationship building, and thought leadership. You have a deep understanding of how Trusts, Foundations, Governments, and High-Net Worth Individuals operate and you have developed proven approaches to identifying, cultivating, securing, and stewarding successful partnerships with these types of funders.
In service of the funding strategy, the Head plays a key role in shaping and aligning cross-coalition strategic external engagement – including relationship management, thought leadership, events, and other positioning collaborations – to advance relationships with funders and those who influence them. The Head curates cross-coalition conversations and spaces to share intelligence, trends, and other insights to shape EM2030’s external positioning. This role requires an experienced senior leader with an established track record of growing existing revenue streams, diversifying income, and pioneering new joint ventures and programmatic collaborations.
We are looking for experienced leaders who live Feminist principles. This role is highly matrixed across the coalition and with other Secretariat departments, especially the Partnerships & Learning and Strategic Communications teams.
What you will Do:
Reporting to the Executive Director, this role will involve the following duties and responsibilities:
Strategic planning, leadership, and management, as a member of the Leadership Team
- Develop and deliver a strategic vision for the Development and External Engagement Department that advances the objectives of the EM2030 coalition,
- Oversee the Development and External Engagement department and budget, and manage staff, vendors, and resources.
- Contribute to broad organizational leadership and strategic development.
- Ensure EM2030 has effective contact and relationship management (CRM) systems and processes to track and manage contacts and external engagement.
- Contribute to organizational monitoring and evaluation processes, especially on metrics related to the Development and External Engagement department.
- Engage with the coalition’s Advisory Body, to ensure they are kept up to date on Development & External Engagement progress and to learn from their expertise.
- Serve as a senior external representative of the EM2030 coalition through public speaking, networking, writing, pitching, and presentations.
Forging philanthropic partnerships and fundraising to resource our collective work
- Direct and lead philanthropic partnerships, fundraising, and donor stewardship for the coalition, with the objective of maintaining our annual revenues at around $3M per year, especially through grants from institutional funders (Trusts, Foundations, and Government donors) and high-net-worth individuals:
- Lead on a fundraising strategy for the EM2030 coalition, including defining fundraising targets, identifying diverse and innovative funding sources, and developing fundraising processes and systems.
- Collaborate with the Head of Finance and Operations to build financial projections and develop targets for financial sustainability.
- Guide and oversee the development of compelling funding concepts and a case for support, based on a deep understanding of EM2030’s programmes, offerings, and unique ‘added value.’
- Oversee the full lifecycle of the funding pipeline, including identification, cultivation, prospecting, and stewardship.
- Build and sustain networks of current and prospective funders and partners (and those who influence them), regularly tracking and mapping key institutions, individuals, conversations, and opportunities, collaborating across the EM2030 Secretariat team and coalition to share intelligence.
- Strengthen relationships with existing philanthropic funders, working closely with the Executive and Deputy Executive Directors, to bring in new funding and grant renewals and build donors as champions.
- Inform funder- and philanthropy-targeted communications strategies and plans, working closely with the Head of Strategic Communications and others across the coalition.
- Engage the Advisory Body, Steering Group, and wider coalition in fundraising efforts including preparing joint funding bids, co-developing funding and project concepts, and guiding networking and relationship-building efforts to support our fundraising goals.
- Cultivate and sustain funding alliances, consortia funding bids, and teaming agreements, within, and beyond, the EM2030 coalition.
- Collaborate with Panorama Global on the planning and submission of funding concepts, to ensure reasonable lead times and high-quality, timely submissions.
- Ensure a culture of accountability for our grant commitments, including ensuring grant reporting and funder engagement are informed by funder priorities and interests.
- Ensure alignment with fundraising ethical check guidelines and other relevant coalition guidelines and expectations.
External engagement and positioning to advance our coalition’s objectives
- Ensure that the EM2030 coalition is visible and well-positioned externally as a leader working at the nexus of gender equality, data, and advocacy/activism.
- Lead a collaborative process to develop and execute a strategy that will clarify our strategic positioning and build the coalition’s visibility, partnerships, and profile.
- Develop and nurture high-level relationships with key external stakeholders.
- Work across the coalition and the Secretariat team to shape and contribute to a range of engagement, influencing, and thought leadership products and events.
- Create coordination mechanisms to gather and pool intelligence across the coalition on key stakeholders, networks, processes, and trends to proactively and reactively leverage external positioning opportunities.
- Contribute to coalition collective messaging, briefings, and recommendations, including through collaboration and engagement with the coalition Advocacy and Communications Working Group.
