Job Title: Research Assistant for Mapping Innovative Art for Local Challenges in Africa

Duration: Fixed-term, (25 hours per week) from 16th September – 16th December 2024

Salary: USD 1,500 – 2,500 per calendar month, depending on qualifications and experience

About the Role:

SAF is seeking a Research Assistant to support a mapping exercise aimed at identifying and analysing innovative art initiatives that address local challenges across Africa. The role involves conducting qualitative interviews, researching contemporary African art, and contributing to a comprehensive report on the impact and effectiveness of these initiatives. This remote position provides an opportunity to engage with dynamic and impactful projects in the field of art and social change. The Research Assistant will work closely with the Research Lead throughout the project.

Responsibilities include designing and implementing the research methodology, conducting interviews, gathering data, and analysing findings. Regular communication with the Research Lead is crucial for ensuring alignment with project objectives and timely progress.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Research Lead to design the research methodology.
  • Conduct qualitative interviews with artists, organisations, and community members to gather insights into their experiences and needs.
  • Research and document contemporary African art initiatives, focusing on their social impact and effectiveness.
  • Analyse data to identify key themes, success stories, and trends in the contemporary African art scene.
  • Prepare a detailed report, in consultation with the Research Lead, highlighting findings and providing recommendations for enhancing the impact of these initiatives.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Minimum education of a BA in Humanities or a related field; an MA in relevant fields is preferable.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is desirable but not essential. • Proven experience in researching contemporary African art.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesise complex information. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote work environment.
