The Youth Climate Justice Fund (YCJF) is hiring a Development Officer (remote based position + $184 per day)

The Youth Climate Justice Fund (YCJF) is seeking a talented and passionate Development Officer to join our team. In this role, you will be instrumental in facilitating and supporting the fundraising of the YCJF, while supporting us in the donor influencing pillar of the fund.

This is a great opportunity for someone willing to learn, with a keen interest in building a career in equitable and decolonized resource mobilization, building strategic narratives and employing empathetic facilitation techniques within the philanthropic space. The ideal candidate is willing to learn about the philanthropic ecosystem regarding youth climate justice groups and advocates for equity in philanthropy.

BACKGROUND 

The Youth Climate Justice Fund (YCJF) supports youth climate justice movements with trust-based funding, resources and youth-to-youth capacity development. The YCJF was publicly launched during New York Climate Week 2023. In September 2023, we also launched our first grantmaking call, receiving more than 1,800 applications from all over the world. In July 2024, we closed our second open call with over 2,500 applications. So far we committed funding to 60+ groups in about 35+ countries.

LOCATION

Remote, preferably in the Global South. 

COMPENSATION

$184 per day – full time (35 hrs/week) + benefits. 

CONTRACT TYPE 

Renewable consultancy contract. The contract will be made by our Fiscal Sponsor based in the United-States, on behalf of the Youth Climate Justice Fund. We offer vacation time and benefits. 

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

As the Development Officer, you will play a crucial role in fundraising and planning the financial growth of the Youth Climate Justice Fund. Working closely with the Development Director, you will be responsible for implementing strategies to secure donations, manage donor relationships, and keep track of the quality of our donor influencing work. This involves identifying potential donors, crafting compelling proposals, organizing fundraising events, and overseeing grant applications. By fostering strong connections with supporters and ensuring effective communication, the Development Officer will sustain and expand the YCJF’s financial resources, ultimately supporting its mission and goals.

Prospective and Research (15%)

  • Scoping, mapping and thoroughly researching new potential requested funding opportunities aligned with YCJF’s mission, purpose, principles and values;
  • Staying updated on philanthropic fundraising and development trends to inform strategic planning (i.e. reading requested philanthropic magazines…).
     

Strategic Resource Mobilization (45%)

  • Leading the development of comprehensive proposals, concept notes, reports, narratives and other essential documents for funders;
  • Preparing reports and narratives in accordance with the YCJF’s grant agreements, ensuring all deadlines and reporting requirements are met;
  • Working collaboratively with the Communications Manager in the development of materials to promote the awareness of the YCJF’s mission and work, including editorials and other articles, and fundraising materials;
  • Tracking interactions with potential and current funders, and partners. Carefully updating databases of contacts on a regular basis;
  • Keeping the records of current and prospective funders updated to facilitate effective relationship management (working closely with Directors and Strategic Coordination Officer);
  • Helping in the convening and organizing of meetings with strategic partners and liaising with the Strategic Coordination Officer to maximize the fundraising potential of each trips;
  • Reviewing and contributing to refining the fundraising and development strategy to align with YCJF’s mission, purpose, principles and values.
     

Donor Relationship Management (35%)

  • Collaborating with the Strategic Coordination Officer and Operations Team to facilitate the planning and execution of in-person and virtual “donor collaborative” convenings (minimum 4 per year);
  • Supporting in the development and curation of content for regular newsletters and other public relations opportunities aimed at our funders and prospective partners;
  • Assisting in the maintenance of an ongoing and high-quality communication with current and prospective donors to secure new funding or sustain/increase existing resources; 
  • Tracking the amount of funding influenced by YCJF free advising services to philanthropies.
     

Capacity Development (5%)

  • Assisting in offering Capacity Development support to YCJF’s grantee partners regarding fundraising and development, as requested by the Community Manager and Governance & Development Director;
  • Tracking the capacity development support offered by the Development team. 
     

PROFILE 

Experience 

  • Proven experience in fundraising, development and/or marketing within non profit initiatives. Additional experience in research and data analysis.
  • Experience in communication and facilitating both virtual and in-person meetings/events. 
  • Proven experience in strategic planning and handling multiple tasks at once. 
  • Committed to advancing social justice movements, particularly within historically marginalized groups such as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), women, queer individuals, and local communities.
  • Passionate about climate justice, committed to addressing the climate crisis by confronting systemic marginalization, exploitation, and oppression while promoting equity and justice. Experience in working with and in support of youth climate justice movements is a plus. 
  • Deeply committed in supporting youth movement leaders and organizations traditionally underserved by mainstream philanthropy.

  • Excellent English language skill (written and spoken).
