We are looking for a Regional Strategic Education Advisor (RSEA) who will operate from any of our offices in Brussels, Kampala, Kigali, Lusaka, Nairobi or Pretoria and is willing to relocate to Addis Ababa once a work permit has been secured. The RSEA will coordinate and implement the VVOB component of the Teach2Empower Project on Gender Transformative Pedagogy and Green Education. Responsibilities

As Regional Strategic Education Advisor of Teach2Empower you will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of VVOB’s Teach2Empower Project (2024-2028). Teach2Empower is funded by the Belgian government as parallel financing to the Facility of the Regional Teacher Initiative for Africa (RTIA).

In close collaboration with VVOB’s RTIA Hub on Gender Transformative Pedagogy (GTP) and the Belgian Development Agencies Enabel and APEFE, you will advocate for integration of GTP and Green Education at the African Regional Institutional Level; develop integrated teacher professional development (TPD) modalities Green and GTP; and establish and support the implementation of a Green and GTP TPD pilot in an African country (TBC).

Reporting to the RTIA Technical Lead based in Kenya, you work in close collaboration with the Global and Regional Strategic Advisors. Initially you will be based in any of VVOB’s Africa offices or in the office in Brussels. Once a work permit for Ethiopia has been secured, you will relocate to Addis Ababa.

You will:

  • Conceptualise and develop teacher professional development (TPD) modalities and materials that integrate Green and Gender Transformative Pedagogies (Green and GTP).
  • Identify, establish and support the implementation of a pilot TPD intervention on Green and GTP in a (to be selected) African country. You take up a variety of roles in the capacity development process according to the needs, particular situations, and phases of the programme.
  • Advocate and influence the development or review of policies on Green and GTP at the African Regional Institutional Level through strategic engagements with organisations and institutions like the African Union Commission (AUC), Regional Economic Communities, ADEA, etc.
  • Promote learning and exchange, and strengthen capacity on Green and GTP at the African Regional level.
  • Co-create, share and exchange on knowledge products on green, digital and gender-transformative principles, approaches and practices.
  • Create and manage partnerships and strong networks with relevant partners, institutions, and organisations on Green and GTP. You represent VVOB in relevant regional platforms on Green and GTP.
  • Contribute to internal and external knowledge development and learning on Green and GTP, by systematising lessons learned and proactively sharing lessons learned between partners, colleagues and other VVOB country teams.

Your expertise and experience

  • Master’s degree in education, human sciences, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in English (C2) and advanced understanding of French (B2) required.
  • International work experience gained in at least 3 countries in Africa.
  • In-depth understanding of the African regional education and policy systems and education sector; especially in regard to gender equity, gender transformative pedagogy and green education.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, coordinating and supporting teacher professional development programs.
  • Experience in developing educational/pedagogical modules and materials (on gender or green education).
  • Experience in organisational and institutional capacity development.
  • Experience of involvement in starting up a new office and/or new teams is desirable.

  • A full-time contract until May 2028.
  • A dynamic working environment in an international context. Initially, the work location can be any of VVOB’s offices in Brussels, Kampala, Kigali, Lusaka, Nairobi or Pretoria (to be based in Brussels or Nairobi you already need to be in possession of a work permit for Belgium or Kenya). Once a work permit for Ethiopia has been secured, the candidate will be expected to relocate to Addis Ababa. Please keep in mind this can be a lengthy process.
