ISS Pretoria: Research Officer, Southern Africa Programme
The ISS is seeking a research officer to work on climate risk and human security in Africa. The research officer will undertake research and analysis, develop policy recommendations based on findings, and communicate results to ISS stakeholders through written products, verbal communication and social media. The research officer will report to a Senior Research Associate.
Overview of duties
- Conduct primary and secondary research and analysis
- Document research results in formats suited to target audiences
- Assist with the dissemination of research results and policy recommendations through written products and participation in events Â
- Carry out administrative and logistical activities, including organising events, coordination, and help with budgeting
- Identify target stakeholders, peer groups, donors and beneficiaries that can contribute to ISS’ work
- Assist with monitoring and evaluation
Overview of requirements
- A minimum of a post-graduate degree (honours level) in social sciences, political science, economics, international relations, law, science or a related climate change field
- At least one year of work experience in a policy, research, government, training or other human security-relevant professional environment
- Knowledge of the challenges that climate change poses to human security in AfricaÂ
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods and analysis
- At least one co-authored publication
- Experience in arranging public and closed events, conferences or training courses
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with mid-level diplomats, government officials and peers
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Good computer skills (including MS Office)
- Self-motivated, able to work quickly, independently and meet deadlines
- Willingness to travel
The contract will be for 12 months and may be renewed subject to ISS’ requirements, funding, and satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.
