The Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre is the expertise centre of the International Red
Cross and Red Crescent in the field of climate change and climate disasters. The Climate Centre’s mission is to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme-weather events on vulnerable people. The Climate Centre consists of an enthusiastic team that guides a growing network of consultants from all over the world in integrating climate risks into their work.

Job Description

The Climate Centre works as part of the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group, leading the
vulnerability and exposure analysis of real-time extreme weather events. WWA quantifies how climate change influences the intensity and likelihood of an extreme weather event in the immediate aftermath of the extreme event using weather observations and computer modelling. To encourage actions that will make communities and countries more resilient to future
extreme weather events, WWA studies also evaluate how existing vulnerability worsened or alleviated the impacts of the extreme weather event.

We are seeking to a hire a consultant to support the analysis and writing up of vulnerability and
exposure factors that either contributed to or reduced the impacts of a recent extreme weather
event. These analyses compliment the findings of extreme event attribution studies to provide a comprehensive overview of the hazard, exposure and vulnerability factors that contributed to an
event. This position will work closely with other experts in the Climate Centre’s global team, as well as partners in the World Weather Attribution group.

Responsibilities

  • Support real-time monitoring and triggering of extreme weather events to the WWA group (as needed)
  • Desk-based review of scientific and grey literature on potentially relevant vulnerability and exposure factors
  • Interviewing and supporting regional or subject-matter experts to input to analyses
  • Scientific report writing to synthesize and convey the most important factors in an objective, and evidence-based way
  • Supporting the development of key messages by synthesising findings across teams
  • Participation in meetings on real-time attribution studies including input on triggers and event definitions

Qualifications

Education: Minimum Masters in a field related to climate, or disaster risk reduction

Experience:

Qualitative research experience in the field of climate and adaptation

Experience working with climate scientists and translating scientific information into
non-technical language

Experience working with the Red Cross Red Crescent movement is an advantage

Skills and Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

Demonstrated ability to write in a clear, concise, and evidence-based way

Ability to work quickly under time pressure, and manage multiple deadlines

Ability to work in a virtual setting which is highly reliant on email as a primary mode of communication

Language: Advanced English language skills are required

Location: This consultancy is virtual and home-based

We offer

A freelance consultancy contract for a total of 25 days until 31 December 2024, with the possibility of extending this up to 40 days in total. We offer a consultancy fee of 250 Euro per day. The Consultant must be officially registered as freelance or self-employed person in the home/work location
