Background

The Graça Machel Trust is implementing Women Creating Wealth – Intergenerational Edition (WCW-l) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. Through this 3-year project, we will reach 3,500 women across Kenya, Senegal, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, and South Africa, and create work opportunities for thousands of young Africans. In addition, we will support the creation of a more enabling environment for women-entrepreneurs to thrive.

Our impact goal is to transform Africa’s economies through a gender-responsive enterprise development system centered around women businesses to accelerate and sustain improvements in quality of life for women and youth. Under WCW – I we posit that: if women entrepreneurs receive personal, leadership and entrepreneurship capacity-strengthening; have access to a community of support, finance, and markets; and exist in an enabling environment, their enterprises will grow and transform from income generation to wealth creation. As their enterprises grow, more meaningful work will be created for the youth.

Our focus on women as catalysts for Africa’s transformation is backed by comprehensive research which shows that money in the hands of women goes a long way to addressing poverty and inequality as women typically invest more in their families and communities. As women create wealth, they are therefore more likely to contribute to the realisation of at least 6 Sustainable Development goals – zero poverty; zero hunger; good health and wellbeing; gender equality; decent work and economic growth.

Duties and responsibilities

Technical Leadership and Implementation

  • Drives the development and implementation of a youth centering strategy to ensure that all elements of the Program’s design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation adopts a Positive Youth Development (PYD) lens.
  • Reviews all internal strategic planning outputs for the Program, to ensure the integration of youth- oriented principles and approaches.
  • Provides technical leadership for Program outcomes, objective and activities aimed at creating work opportunities for 52,500 unemployed youth.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Together with the Learning and Skills Development Specialist and Project Lead, reviews and adapts the Women Creating Wealth entrepreneurship training Program to ensure that content and delivery is relevant for youth participants.
  • Supports the Trust’s People and Culture Department in ensuring that at least 60% of the Program implementation team is comprised of young women and men – at every level.
  • Creates a culture that enables youth to thrive in their roles, by leading on the delivery of PYD training for staff and implementing partners.
  • Works closely with the Program’s Safeguarding Officer, Project Lead and Managers to create a safe and nurturing environment for youth participating in the Program, in line with the Trust’s safeguarding policies.
  • Provides advisory services to project departments around gender equality and inclusion.

Partnership Building

  • As part of the governance structure for the Program, and to ensure that a youth lens and voice informs all aspects of our work, spearheads the establishment of a Youth Advisory Group (YAG).
  • Identifies in each country, youth led or serving organization/s who bring the relevant technical expertise, knowledge, and capability to mobilize targeted youth.

Thought Leadership

  • Acts as the Program’s focal thought leadership person around youth development. This will entail developing/contributing to research, thought leadership and knowledge products, and other relevant activities.

Qualifications Education

  • A post graduate qualification in a relevant field of study required.

Technical competencies

  • Seven (7) years or more of progressively responsible international work experience implementing youth programs, with demonstrated strong technical skills.
  • Experience in entrepreneurship/enterprise development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of positive youth development and experience implementing PYD approaches.
  • Desirable: Demonstrated knowledge about gender and development, and demonstrated experience and proficiency in managing programs that mainstream gender.
  • Experience designing and delivering capacity building interventions/training.
  • Experience working and collaborating with diverse sets of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience developing thought or knowledge products.
  • Demonstrable contextual knowledge of/experience working in the relevant country related to your application (i.e., either Kenya, Senegal, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, or South Africa).
  • Ability to thrive in a matrix structure environment.

Ability to travel (25% of the time).
