Are you a young Kenyan professional passionate about addressing climate change challenges through science, policy, and practice? The African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) invites you to apply for the Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme (ECCF) – an opportunity to kickstart your career as a climate leader and contribute to shaping Kenya’s climate agenda.

1. The Fellowship

The ECCF offers talented young individuals from Kenya a unique pathway to delve into the intersection of climate science, policy development, and practical implementation. Partnering with the NDC Delivery Lab, the Fellowship supports emerging leaders in navigating diverse decision-making environments within the climate change landscape. This innovative approach fosters creative solutions to address climate risks while ensuring the effective translation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) into impactful actions.

2. Aim of the Fellowship

The ECCF aims to nurture Kenya’s next generation of climate leaders equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the climate science-policy-practice nexus. By fostering deeper insights into contemporary climate challenges, the Fellowship empowers young professionals to emerge as independent leaders in their chosen fields, driving tangible climate action in Africa and beyond.

3. Objectives of the ECCF Programme

  • Contribute to IPCC Processes: Empower young professionals to actively contribute to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) processes.
  • Bridge Science, Policy, and Practice: Offer a platform for early career professionals to engage at the interface of climate science, policy, and practice, supporting the implementation of global climate agreements.
  • Experiential Learning and Mentorship: Provide hands-on learning experiences in climate policy and negotiations while fostering innovative analytical work through mentorship.
  • Establish Long-term Networks: Facilitate the creation of enduring networks of experts to exchange knowledge, generate innovative ideas, and enhance climate action policies and programming.

4. Duration and Start of Fellowship

  • Duration: 6 months (1st July, 2024, to 31st December, 2024).
  • Full-time Participation: Fellows are expected to engage on a full-time basis.

5. Eligibility Criteria

Are you eligible to apply? Here’s what you need:

  • Nationality: Kenyan, aged not more than 28 years old.
  • Education: Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from any field at the time of application.
  • Experience: Early career researcher with no more than two years since completing their degree at the time of application.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, creative and critical thinking abilities, and a keen interest in multicultural and interdisciplinary environments.
  • Employment Status: Applicants currently employed must provide evidence of their employer’s consent for the Fellowship duration.
  • Interest: Display a clear interest in the science-policy-practice interface related to climate change.

6. Benefits

Selected Fellows will receive a fellowship stipend as per AGNES’ Human Resources Manual.

7. Application Procedure

  • Cover Letter: Describe how your qualifications and career goals align with the ECCF programme (maximum 1 page).
  • CV: Up-to-date curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages).
  • Academic Transcripts/Certificates: Copies of all academic transcripts and degree certificates to date.
