Summary of Responsibilities
IREX seeks qualified research consultant based in Kenya to support development of 2 localized case studies related to Technology-Facilitated Gender Based Violence in Kenya, focusing (1) on strategies of resilience utilized by Kenyan women to counter TFGBV in social media platforms and (2) on composite profiles Kenyan women attempting to make use of Kenya’s legal protections to redress TFGBV.
Please note this position is part-time and based on the needs of the project, with an expected engagement of 25 days of effort distributed across May, June, and July 2024. The chosen consultant will work remotely, and travel within Nairobi as required.
Your Anticipated Tasks
The research consultant will perform the following tasks in Kenya.
- Work collaboratively with the Transform Technical Advisor to draft the research protocols
- Submit and ensure approval of the research protocols by a Kenya-based Institutional Scientific & Ethical Review Committee (ISERC), which is accredited by the National Commission for Science & Technology (NACOSTI
- Identify and interview key informants
- Conduct focus groups with relevant persons as appropriate.
- Review documents and/or research materials as appropriate.
- Submit two case study reports, incorporating feedback on drafts from the Transform team.
- Participate in the report dissemination/validation session as required.
Deliverables
- Deliverable 1: Research protocols developed and approved by a NACOSTI accredited institution
- Deliverable 2 : Research plan, identifying key individuals and organizations to profile, proposed research methods (e.g., interviews, document review, focus groups), and proposed participant recruitment plan.
- Deliverables 3 and 4: Drafts of two case study reports documenting the outcomes of tasks listed above which could include but are not limited to data collected from focus groups, outcomes of key informant interviews, data from surveys with participants, description and explanation of vulnerable populations, and review and analysis of additional materials as appropriate.
- Deliverables 5 and 6: A final draft of each case study report incorporating feedback and review by the Transform team.
Your Background & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in in gender or women’s studies, international development, social science, or another relevant field, advanced degree preferred.
- Technical knowledge and expertise in gender equality and social inclusion
- Demonstrated experience with GESI mainstreaming on international donor-funded programs. Familiarity with USAID or USG GESI strategies, frameworks and requirements preferred.
- Experience upholding high ethical standards in research
- At least three (3) years’ experience conducting research
- Previous experience conducting gender research preferred
- Qualitative and quantitative research skills
- Excellent written and oral command of English and Kiswahili.
- Physically based in Kenya.
- Preferred: human subjects research certification through CITI training or other comparable programs
