Greenpeace International is looking for 2 Web Developers to combine proven backend and frontend expertise with a real drive to embrace new opportunities, pick up new knowledge and skills – and help deliver winning solutions.

*offered on a 12 month contract basis initially, with possibility of extension / move to permanent contract.

Location: The successful candidates may be based in a country where one of the independent National/Regional Greenpeace organisations (NRO’s) is located. See the locations here[Unfortunately, we are currently unable to host new staff in a number of NROs at this present time, due to various restrictions. We are unable to support hosting of new staff in Africa, India, US, UK, Italy, Colombia, MENA region, in addition to some other NRO locations. Playing a vital part in our Technology Department, you will be responsible for developing, reviewing, testing and deploying our websites, themes and plugins, as well as for supporting end users and resolving bugs. Our ultimate purpose is to enable the Greenpeace network to win campaigns faster, empowering all our teams to have their greatest impact, and ensuring that our relationship with technology and data reflects our values and our mission.

In this role you will:

  • Write well designed, testable, efficient code by using best software development practices.
  • Integrate data from various external services and databases.
  • Develop enhancements and resolve bugs as part of the product release lifecycle.
  • Design and develop scripts to allow data migration and integration with other systems.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks, proposing and implementing solutions.
  • Build cross-browser solutions optimized for mobile devices.
  • Interact with volunteer developers who contribute code to our open source projects.
  • Work in an Agile environment using Scrum methodology.
  • Participate in the design of new features and change requests and discuss technical feasibility.
  • Write documentation to facilitate collaboration and maintenance of the platform.
  • Make decisions related to code architecture and technical approach.
  • Create, deploy and maintain automation tools to streamline development, testing, deployment and monitoring processes.
  • Write functional and unit tests in order to prevent regressions.
  • Review 3rd party themes and plugins and make integration recommendations.
  • Release code to the staging and production environments.
  • Assist with end user technical questions and troubleshoot new issues.

Job requirements

What we’re looking for:

Remember no one has every skill or experience needed for this role and you’ll have the opportunity to learn a lot from the team. We believe someone who has a few of these is well suited to exceed in this role:

  • Several years’ experience with web development in high traffic environments.
  • Exceptional skills with backend (e.g. PHP) and frontend (e.g. HTML, CSS, Javascript) web technologies.
  • Experience with frontend frameworks, such as React.
  • Experience with testing methodologies, test driven development and automated testing.
  • Experience building or extending themes in templates languages.
  • Experience with automation tools and build systems (eg. composer, webpack).
  • Experience with performance testing and tuning.
  • Experience with development tools such as Git and Docker.
  • Strong knowledge of web usability standards and cross-browser compatibility issues.
  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written, and preferably one other language.
  • Ability to thrive in a remote-only, culturally diverse team, and to learn new methods and technologies.
  • Demonstrable support for and belief in the Greenpeace network core aims and values.
  • Digital literacy skills; the ability to learn and utilise our digital platforms to successfully perform the role function (familiarity with G-Suite, Slack and Zoom is an advantage)

You’ll be working in the team that is building the software powering Greenpeace.org websites. It’s being developed on top of WordPress and it’s using open source principles. This Medium publication is the central hub for news, updates and insights into the project.
