The Youth Climate Justice Fund (YCJF) is seeking a talented and passionate participatory Grantmaking Manager to join our team. As the Grants Manager, you will play a crucial role in facilitating and supporting the participatory grant-making model of the YCJF while supporting us in further decentralization and regionalising the decision-making processes.

This is a great opportunity for someone willing to lead and learn, with a keen interest in building a career in participatory approaches to decision making, prioritizing the needs of grantee partners and employing empathetic facilitation techniques within the philanthropic or civil society space. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the challenges and power dynamics faced by youth climate justice groups and advocates for promoting equity in philanthropy.

BACKGROUND 

The Youth Climate Justice Fund (YCJF) supports youth climate justice movements with trust-based funding, resources and youth-to-youth capacity development. The YCJF was publicly launched during New York Climate Week 2023. In September 2023, we also launched our first grantmaking call, receiving more than 1,800 applications from all over the world. In 2023, we supported 40 groups working on climate justice with an initial $500.000. 

LOCATION

Remote, preferably in the Global South. 

COMPENSATION

230$ per day – full time (35hrs/week) + benefits. 

CONTRACT TYPE 

Renewable consultancy contract. The contract will be made by our Fiscal Sponsor based in the United-States, on behalf of the Youth Climate Justice Fund. We offer vacation time and benefits.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

Participatory Grantmaking 

  • Lead the preparation of the launch of the YCJF call for application (facilitating with regional teams to prepare translated materials, dissemination with key partners, briefing sessions, submission platform…). 
  • Distribute appropriately the right amount of applications to each of the youth-led steering committees.  
  • Answer enquiries and prepare an FAQ guide for prospective applicants. 
  • Design a process, in consultation with regional teams, to receive and translate applications submitted in one of the 6 available languages to English. 
  • Proactively research ways to improve our participatory decentralized grant-making process. 
     

Facilitation of the participatory grant-making processes 
 

  • Lead the implementation of the YCJF’s incoming decentralized participatory grantmaking model (i.e. support building processes, guidelines and safeguarding rules,…).
  • Support the regional facilitators to organize and lead their participatory grantmaking roundtables at the regional levels (i.e. facilitation, mediation, guidance…). 
  • Organize training to empower Regional Facilitators and Advisors to be able to make their decisions with the right processes, tools and approach. 
  • Distribute in appropriate and flexible ways all the applications to each of the regional boards. 
  • Attend regional grantmaking committee discussions when language spoken allows. 
  • Conduct and facilitate meetings Meet with each selected prospective grantee partner and the Strategy Director.
     

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning 
 

  • Ensure that each of the regional boards are able to meet deadlines in a timely manner and provide the right support. 
  • Ensure that the highest standard of communication, collaboration and safeguarding practices are maintained throughout the process (centered around kindness, empathy and understanding).
  • Build learnings about the YCJF participative grantmaking processes and provide suggestions on how to improve our work. 
  • Support Regional Facilitators in maintaining robust records from their discussions. 
  • When needed, implement processes to ensure that disciplinary measures are taken in case of abuse or harassment in accordance with the YCJF Safeguarding Policy. 
     

PROFILE 
 

Experience 
 

  • Over 5 years of experience dedicated to working in social justice philanthropy or movements (experience working in facilitation at multiple scales is a plus).
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice movements, particularly within historically marginalized groups such as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), women, queer individuals, and local communities.
  • Passionate about climate justice, committed to addressing the climate crisis by confronting systemic marginalization, exploitation, and oppression while promoting equity and justice.
  • Proven track record in communication and experienced in facilitating both virtual and in-person meetings/events. 
  • Possesses agility, quick thinking, and a profound sense of care and compassion when working with communities facing extraordinary organizing conditions.
  • Deeply invested in supporting youth movement leaders and organizations traditionally underserved by mainstream philanthropy.
  • Experience working with a variety of online tools especially in settings with low bandwidth (i.e. use of online conversational challenges such as Telegram, Signal, WhatsApp). 
  • Prior proven experience successfully managing staff and consultants is required. 
  • Experience in working with and in support of youth climate justice movements is a plus.

Additional valued skills
 

  • Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills 
  • Experience in speaking in one or more of the YCJF working languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Swahili, Arabic, Hindi, French) or any additional local or indigenous languages.
