Quantitative Researcher (Contract), Climate-Health

We are seeking a Quantitative Researcher to join our Gender Equity x Climate project. You will be a key contributor in developing a first-of-its-kind predictive model to understand the effects of climate change stressors on reproductive health and gender equity outcomes in a subset of low- and middle-income country contexts. One key goal of the analysis is to identify areas of high climate risk where additional research and investment will likely be needed in order to avert poor health and gender outcomes. 

You will work closely with a small multidisciplinary team of public health researchers and environmental scientists to review relevant datasets, select variables, thoughtfully define parameters, build an open-source model, and analyze and write-up results that will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal and also presented on a freely accessible website. Your work will influence and inform the decisions of key stakeholders in the international health, development, and climate adaptation sectors. 

This is an independent contractor (Consultancy)  position, based remotely. This is approximately a four-month contract, running from April 8 2024 through July 31 2024, with 25-35 hours per week expected.

VIEW DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

YOU WILL:

Forecast Modeling – 70%

• Review and select available datasets and evidence, in partnership with the project team 
• Together with project team, select key climate, health, and gender indicators to include within the analysis; Make recommendations for focal countries/regions to focus the analysis on, based on the availability and quality of data
• Lead the process of developing and defining the parameters and assumptions underlying the forecasting model 
• Use available and credible data to develop a predictive model of changes in selected sexual and reproductive health and gender equality indicators under different climate scenarios (e.g. 1.5 C warming versus 3 C) in a subset of low and middle-income countries, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia
• Interested applicants who are selected for an interview will be asked to outline their proposed quantitative modeling approach and timeline.

Research Publication and Translation – 30%

• Write-up the methodology, results, and conclusions in manuscript format to submit for publication, in partnership with a senior research analyst and the project lead
• Collaborate with a graphic web designer to turn the forecasting model and results into a visual, interactive resource on a website available to the non-academic public
• Develop recommendations for further research and evidence generation (e.g., countries/regions with a paucity of data)
• Present the research methodology and results to a range of stakeholder audiences as needed, in partnership with other members of the project team

YOU ARE:

• Comfortable working in a emerging, interdisciplinary research space and making recommendations for appropriate research and analysis approaches based on limitations of available data and evidence
• Experienced in explaining quantitative research and modeling approaches, techniques, and limitations to non-technical audiences 
• Familiar with different methodological and statistical approaches for modeling and predictive statistical analysis, and able to explain the limitations and advantages of each
• Highly collaborative and experienced working in fast-paced, consulting-style environments

YOU HAVE:

• 5+ years of experience with applying quantitative research methods, including predictive forecasting, to public health, gender in development, and/or climate change 
• Been a primary or secondary author on at least two peer-reviewed publications of quantitative research 
• Experience working as quantitative researcher in multidisciplinary project teams
• Familiarity working with large public health/epidemiological datasets and/or environmental/climate datasets, especially from low-resource settings
• Expertise with predictive modeling in the field of climate science 
• Full working professional proficiency in English (spoken and written)

DESIRABLE:

• M.S. or PhD in statistics, data science, epidemiology, climate science or related field
• Interest in gender equality, climate justice, and reproductive health access
• Experience living and/or working in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or Southeast Asia
