Work Fully Remote as a Africa Communications Campaigner (Contractor) at Oil Change International: Apply!!

We are looking to bring on a contractor for our Africa Program to work as the Communications Campaigner in the region. Although you do not need to live in the Africa region, we are asking for applicants to have experience working on projects within the region. The rate is $32-$37/hr (dependent on experience) for 36 hrs/wk and will last for a duration of 12 months (although we are open to talking to candidates about how we could use this budget more flexibility to take into account other part-time options). This role will report to the Africa Program Director.

Contractor will also receive paid time off in addition to the hourly rate that will be accrued monthly to ensure safe and healthy working conditions.

Up to 3-4 weeks of travel should be expected throughout the course of this contract.

Major Responsibilities

Strategy Development

  • Work closely with OCI’s Africa Program Director to scope, design, and implement communications and media strategies to support campaigns aimed at raising the profile of our work within Africa. 
  • Plan and execute communications strategies to advance our messaging and campaign goals around key international political moments and report launches.
  • Coordinate with OCI’s Communications Director and communications team to align on goals, approach, and priorities for Africa communications and help improve OCI’s shared communication platforms.

Media Outreach

  • Develop and maintain international and region-specific press lists relevant to the Africa team’s work.
  • Build relationships with and pitch stories to reporters around Africa campaigns and initiatives.
  • Monitor media coverage and public narratives related to the Africa team’s work in international and regional news outlets. 
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with communicators from partner networks and allies

Content Creation & Dissemination 

  • Help draft and edit a variety of materials to reach target audiences, translating technical or complicated materials into understandable, attention-grabbing, and energizing content. This could include press releases, factsheets, messaging guides, emails to our supporter list, blog posts, website text, social media posts, partner toolkits – as well as creative and innovative content ideas you bring to the team.
  • Use OCI’s communications platforms to set up and send campaign-related press releases, supporter emails, and social media posts.

Partner Engagement 

  • Collaborate with communications-focused allies and partners within relevant civil society networks on efforts to drive visibility to the Africa team’s work, including representing OCI in communications-focused working groups and meetings focused on Africa.
  • Coordinate with and lend communications support and capacity to regional and local partners engaged in campaigns to push back against fossil fuel infrastructure and promote local, sustainable sources of energy.

Administrative 

  • Update and maintain quarterly and annual goals and individual work plans.
  • Participate and be a constructive force in staff and team meetings.
  • Help maintain our shared calendar of upcoming projects and deadlines.
  • Respond to administrative requests in a timely and courteous manner, including submitting timesheets and expense reports by established deadlines.

About You

Required Skills / Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience with advocacy efforts related to social justice and/or energy and climate policies with a track record of developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Ability to translate technical or complicated materials into motivating and energizing content for engaging the media, advocacy targets, civil society partners, and/or supporters.
  • Fluency writing, reading, and speaking in English

Desired Skills / Experience:

  • Existing relationships with journalists covering climate and energy issues in Africa.
  • Familiarity with working in a remote global office environment (e.g. using video calls, messaging platforms).
  • Ability to work and develop relationships in multicultural teams, across geographic time zones
  • Experience developing and implementing social media strategies (e.g. Facebook,
  • Twitter, Instagram).
  • Familiarity with media tracking and engagement tools (e.g. Meltwater, Cision, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Google apps (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar).
