Background
The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), together with the National Treasury of South Africa (NT) is seeking applicants for a 1-year Research Assistant (RA) position, based in Pretoria, South Africa. The RA will be hired with the express aim of contributing publications, either solo or co-authored, the Southern Africa – Towards Inclusive Economic Development (SA-TIED) programme.
Expectations
The applicant will be expected to collaborate with relevant UNU-WIDER and NT staff to author research outputs.
- The candidate will be expected to:
- Analyse economic trends and evaluate economic indicators for the South African economy.
- Assess potential impacts of policy changes.
- Support SA-TIED research activities (including analysing data, implementing simulations, report writing inter alia).
- Facilitate knowledge-sharing between various stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor related to the research and administrative work.
Requirements and desired skills
The candidate must be based in Pretoria. South Africa and hold a valid work permit for South Africa. The candidate should also have:
- A Master’s Degree or equivalent in Economics.
- Well-developed applied research skills.
- A proven track record in terms of written research.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Fluency in oral and written English.
- Sound knowledge in working with data, including data cleaning and generation of baseline statistics, and have experience working with microdata and using relevant econometrics software packages is an added advantage.
Terms
Research Assistants will be issued a consultancy contract for up to twelve-months with UNU-WIDER. The Research Assistant will receive a lump sum of USD 2,150.09 per month. No extra payments for housing or living expenses will be made. Project-related costs will, however, be covered by the project

Evaluation process and criteria
Each application will be reviewed on the basis of relevant experience and personal motivation. Preference will be given to applications from previously disadvantaged and female scholars. Only the final decision on whether an application is accepted or not will be communicated to applying researchers.
