PhD Scholarships for Research on Rural Youth Transitions at Keele University (Fully funded)

The rural landscape is facing unprecedented challenges, impacting both human communities and wildlife. Yet, within these challenges lies the potential for crafting sustainable futures that benefit all. The Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships Programme for Sustainable Rural Futures (SURF) is dedicated to addressing these pressing issues through community-led solutions and embracing the intricate relationships between humans and nature.

Understanding the Rural Crisis

In today’s world, rural areas are grappling with various difficulties, from economic struggles to environmental degradation. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and resilience. SURF recognizes the importance of rural communities in shaping their own destinies and seeks to empower them to lead the way towards a more sustainable future.

Guiding Principles of SURF

  1. Community-Led Solutions: SURF is committed to working hand in hand with rural communities, partnering with local organizations, individuals, and leaders to co-create solutions that address their specific needs. Doctoral scholars within the program will actively engage with these communities, adapting their research to align with identified challenges and opportunities.
  2. More-Than-Human Approach: Rural life is characterized by its intricate connections between humans and the environment. SURF advocates for a “more-than-human” perspective, recognizing the interdependence of various elements such as soil health, cultural practices, ecological systems, and labor dynamics. This holistic approach demands interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle complex rural issues effectively.
