Unlocking Possibilities: Apply for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships 2024

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships are available to citizens from eligible countries. If your country is not on the list, then the New Zealand Government does not offer any academic scholarships to you.

Types of Manaaki scholarships

New Zealand offers scholarships to eligible citizens from developing countries to study abroad at a New Zealand education institution or university or at a Pacific university.

The New Zealand Government offers these Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships

Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate study

These are full tertiary scholarships for eligible international students to study fulltime at a New Zealand education institution or a Pacific university.

Short Term Training Scholarships for Pacific and Timor-Leste citizens

These are short scholarships for skills training and on-the-job work experience for workers from eligible Pacific countries and from Timor-Leste.

Short Term Training Scholarships for citizens of Southeast Asia and Timor-Leste

These are short scholarships for skills training for workers from eligible Southeast Asian countries and from Timor-Leste.

English Language Training for Officials Scholarships (NZELTO)

These are short scholarships for government officials from eligible African and Asian countries to come to New Zealand for English language training.

List of countries that we offer New Zealand Scholarships to. We only accept applications from citizens of countries on the list.

Pacific Countries

Citizens from eligible countries in the Pacific have two full scholarship options. Eligible scholars can choose to study in New Zealand or at a Pacific university.

Option 1: Scholarships to study in New Zealand

Eligible Pacific countries:

Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji (postgraduate only), Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu

Note: Cook Island scholars have their own scholarship managed by the Cook Islands Ministry of Education and funded by the New Zealand Government

Note: Tokelau scholars are currently only eligible to apply for Short Term Training Scholarships

Levels of study available:

  • Undergraduate Degree (3-4 years)
  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (3.5 years)

Expected start dates:

We aim for Pacific scholars selected in 2024 to enter New Zealand to commence study from Semester 1, 2025.

Option 2: Scholarships to study at a Pacific university

Eligible Pacific countries:

Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

Levels of study available:

You can study these qualifications at one of two universities in Fiji or Vanuatu:

  • Undergraduate Degree (3-4 years)
  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (3.5 years)

Expected start dates:

We aim for Pacific scholars selected in 2024 to enter their Pacific study country to commence study from Semester 1, 2025.

Asian Countries

Cambodia, Indonesia, Jordan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar*, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives.

*In 2024 only ASEAN Short-term Training Scholarships will be offered for scholars from Myanmar.

Levels of study available:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (3.5 years)

Expected start dates:

We aim for scholars selected in 2024 to enter their study country to commence study from Semester 1, 2025.

African Countries

Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leonne, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe 

Levels of study available:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (3.5 years)

Expected start dates:

We aim for scholars selected in 2024 to enter their study country to commence study from Semester 1, 2025.

Caribbean Countries

Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname.

(Please note that Dominican Republic is listed under the eligible countries for Latin America)

Levels of study available:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (3.5 years)

We aim for scholars selected in 2024 to enter their study country to commence study from Semester 1, 2025.

Latin America Countries

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela

Levels of study available:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Master’s Degree (1-2 years)
  • PhD (3.5 years)

We aim for scholars selected in 2024 to enter their study country to commence study from Semester 1, 2025. We only accept applications from citizens from eligible countries.
