Consultancy: CSV Research Online Course Module Development
on participatory research methods while ensuring meaningful and ethical engagement of children, adolescents, survivors, and communities in child sexual violence research
Background
The SVRI is the world’s largest network on research on violence against women (VAW) and violence against children (VAC), providing a space where global role players in the field connect with one another, share, and promote their research, work to influence policies, and improve the lives of those who have experienced gender-based violence. We do this through funding research, strengthening research capacity, promoting partnerships and influencing change. Our full strategy is available online here.
A key goal of the SVRI is to strengthen research capacities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to expand the evidence base that will improve policies and programmes to respond to and prevent VAW and VAC. To achieve this goal, we host and facilitate various bespoke workshops and open learning events, and online-courses.
Project overview and background
The SVRI, with support from Oak Foundation plans to deliver an open, publicly available online course with multiple modules, informed by a survey conducted by SVRI in September 2023. The survey aimed to help us better understand capacity needs in child sexual violence (CSV) research and assist us in developing online learning events and knowledge products including a new online course focussing on an area of CSV research and evidence building.
The survey received 234 responses from 51 countries across the globe, with 79% of respondents being from LMICs and working on various child maltreatment and/or gender-based violence (GBV) issues. Respondents represented various stakeholder groups including researchers, practitioners and service providers, program administrators and managers, as well as independent consultants, policy makers, activists, donors, and funders. Based on the survey responses, the SVRI seeks to introduce a new online CSV research course on participatory research methods while ensuring meaningful and ethical engagement of children, adolescents, survivors, and communities in child sexual violence research, and seeks the services of a consultant to assist in the development of an online course.
Consultancy Aim

- Develop an online course on how to use participatory research methods while ensuring meaningful and ethical engagement of children, adolescents, survivors, and communities in child sexual violence research: this includes reviewing and synthesising existing information on courses on participatory CSV research conducted online; gathering and/creating high quality resources on participatory research and meaningful engagement; conducting an in depth needs assessment among SVRI grantees and other key stakeholders/experts to gauge their experience with participatory CSV research and identify specific capacity strengthening needs in the field; developing and testing a brief course module that includes all the materials and activities needed with emphasis on interactive learning; and, liaising with existing partners to integrate various contributions to course modules content.
- Deliver online course within SVRI platform.

- Coordinate a consortium of service providers and partners as needed to assist in the production and quality assurance of content and course material, as well as assessment and evaluation tools.
Integrate the course modules within SVRI’s online training platform:
- Liaise with SVRIs team to develop the online learning platform and upload all components for the participatory research and meaningful engagement of children, adolescents, survivors, and communities in child sexual violence research course.
